Top Story: Reopening plans for students and staff

Earlier this week communication was sent out to our team outlining district expectations for the first four weeks of school. The following are key decisions aligned with current guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Austin Public Health Guidance on Reopening:

• Our intent is to have all students remain in a remote, off-campus learning environment the first four weeks of school, Sept. 8–Oct. 5.
• Most instructional staff will facilitate remote learning off campus during those first four weeks. No teachers are required to report to their campus at the start of school.
• Campuses are reaching out to all families to help secure the needed devices and/or access to Wi-Fi for off-campus, remote learning.
• A select number of team members will be called in to campus to support certain groups of students.
• Teaching staff who need to care for children are encouraged to continue working remotely for the first four weeks.
• All Austin ISD facilities will maintain no more than 25% building capacity as currently recommended by Austin Public Health.

Face Coverings

While Austin ISD will be remote from Sept. 8-Oct. 5, we want our families to be well aware of our planned on-campus procedures. Austin ISD is following CDC guidance for schools regarding the use of face masks as described below. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend all people 2 years of age and older wear a mask in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household.

• Wearing a face covering that covers the mouth and nose will be required for ALL students, staff, and visitors while on Austin ISD grounds.
• Staff conducting health screenings will be required to wear face masks and face shields.
• All elementary and secondary (middle and high school) students are required to wear a face mask that fully covers the nose and mouth.
• As recommended by the CDC, time will be dedicated to teaching and reinforcing the use of face coverings.

Staff and students are encouraged to bring their own reusable cloth face masks to ensure a comfortable fit. In the event a student forgets to bring their own mask, a face mask will be provided at the school for use by the student for that day. Reusable cloth face masks must be washed daily. Bandanas and face masks with air vents will not be allowed. Austin ISD will provide a face mask to students, staff, service providers and approved visitors who arrive at a school or other facility without one. Face shields may not be worn in place of a face mask, but can be worn in addition to a mask. Accommodations to the required use of face masks will be made on a case-by-case basis for students and staff.

Austin ISD is open for learning officially on Sept. 8, and we’re excited to see our students, staff and families! We've been working hard preparing for online learning this fall with everything from professional development to collaboration between educators.

Back to School Bash

The annual Austin ISD Back to School Bash is changing how we get supplies to families, along with an increase of 13,000 additional backpacks distributed to students. 

The Back to School Bash has historically been an avenue for families to receive services and connect with community organizations ahead of the first day of school. Families will still be able to access those services, including free car booster seats, with the Bash Virtual Backpack. Through this service, families can engage with nearly 60 community organizations to receive support during this unique year. 

Austin ISD, with the help of Office Depot, distributed a total of 17,500 backpacks to campuses. The district distributed about 4,500 backpacks In previous years at the Back to School Bash. Campuses received backpacks with supplies for 40 percent of their students who qualify for free and reduced lunch services. For example, a campus with 400 qualifying students, received 160 backpacks.

Noticia principal: Planes de reapertura para los estudiantes y el personal

En la comunicación de principios de esta semana se envió a nuestro equipo un resumen de las expectativas del distrito para las primeras cuatro semanas de clases. Las siguientes son decisiones clave que se alinean con las recomendaciones actuales de los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) y de Salud Pública de Austin para la reapertura:

• Nuestra intención es que todos los estudiantes permanezcan en un ambiente de aprendizaje remoto fuera del plantel las primeras cuatro semanas de clases, del 8 de septiembre al 2 de octubre.
• La mayoría del personal docente facilitará el aprendizaje remoto fuera del plantel durante esas primeras cuatro semanas. Ningún maestro tiene la obligación de presentarse a su plantel cuando comiencen las clases.
• Los planteles están comunicándose con todas las familias para ayudar a obtener los dispositivos necesarios o acceso a wifi para el aprendizaje remoto fuera del plantel.
• Se llamará a un número selecto de miembros del equipo al plantel para que apoyen a ciertos grupos de estudiantes.
• Se le recomienda al personal docente que necesite cuidar niños que siga trabajando de forma remota por las primeras cuatro semanas.
• Todas las instalaciones del Austin ISD mantendrán no más de 25% de la capacidad del edificio, según lo recomienda actualmente Salud Pública de Austin.

Protectores faciales

Mientras el Austin ISD esté remoto del 8 de septiembre al 5 de octubre, queremos que nuestras familias estén conscientes de nuestros procedimientos planeados para el plantel. El Austin ISD está siguiendo las recomendaciones de los CDC para las escuelas sobre el uso de cubrebocas como se describen a continuación. Los Centros de Control de Enfermedades y Prevención recomiendan que todas las personas mayores de 2 años usen cubrebocas en entornos públicos y cuando estén con otras personas que no vivan en su casa.

• El uso de un protector facial que cubra la boca y la nariz será obligatorio para TODOS los estudiantes, el personal y los visitantes mientras se encuentren en propiedades del Austin ISD.
• Se requerirá que el personal que esté haciendo chequeos de salud use cubrebocas y protectores faciales.
• Se requiere que todos los estudiantes de educación primaria y secundaria (secundaria y preparatoria) usen cubrebocas que les cubran totalmente la nariz y la boca.
• Como lo recomiendan los CDC, se dedicará un tiempo para enseñar y reforzar el uso de protectores faciales.

Se les anima al personal y los estudiantes que traigan sus propios cubrebocas reusables de tela para garantizar que les queden cómodos. En caso de que a un estudiante se le olvide traer su propio cubrebocas, se le proporcionará uno en la escuela para que lo use el estudiante ese día. Los cubrebocas reusables de tela tienen que lavarlos diariamente. Las bandanas y los cubrebocas con ventilación no se permitirán. El Austin ISD proporcionará un cubrebocas para los estudiantes, el personal, los proveedores de servicios y los visitantes aprobados que lleguen a una escuela u otras instalaciones sin traer uno. Los protectores faciales no podrán usarlos en lugar de un cubrebocas, pero sí los pueden usar además del cubrebocas. Las adaptaciones al uso obligatorio de cubrebocas se harán caso por caso para los estudiantes y el personal.

Celebración de Regreso a Clases

La Celebración de Regreso a Clases del Austin ISD anual, está cambiando la manera de entregarles los útiles escolares a las familias, así como distribuyendo 13,000 mochilas adicionales a los estudiantes.

La Celebración de Regreso a Clases ha sido históricamente un conducto para que las familias reciban servicios y se pongan en contacto con organizaciones comunitarias antes del primer día de clases. Con la Celebración de mochilas virtual, las familias todavía van a poder tener acceso a esos servicios, incluyendo los asientos elevados gratuitos para el automóvil. A través de este servicio, las familias pueden involucrarse con casi 60 organizaciones comunitarias para recibir apoyo durante este año especial.

El Austin ISD, con la ayuda de Office Depot, distribuyó un total de 17,500 mochilas a los planteles.
