AISD Celebrates Grand Opening of Modernized Blazier Intermediate Site

Today, Austin ISD and Blazier Elementary School celebrated the grand opening ceremony of the modernized Blazier School Intermediate Site, built as part of the 2017 Bond Program.

Students, families and community members joined AISD and Blazier campus leadership this morning in a virtual event to honor the milestone.

The event featured remarks from Blazier Principal Leti Peña, Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde and Board of Trustees President Geronimo Rodriguez. Attendees enjoyed a video tour of the new facility, as well as a video of Blazier students sharing their excitement for the modernized campus.

“The new Blazier Intermediate shows our community’s commitment to meet the growing needs of our student population and we are so proud to pioneer the first Intermediate Site in Austin ISD for students in grades four through six,” Peña said. “Our staff is overjoyed to welcome students and their families to this impressive new campus. I want to thank all those who contributed to this project – district leadership, the Campus Architectural Team, American Constructors, BLGY Architecture and the entire Blazier community for their involvement and support. We are incredibly excited to celebrate this milestone.”

Construction of the new, modernized building began in June 2019 and was completed in August 2020 for the start of the fall semester. It is the first facility specifically designed to serve fourth, fifth and sixth grades in Austin ISD. As part of the 2017 Bond Program, this project provides immediate relief to overcapacity at the Blazier Elementary School Primary Site.

“The Blazier Intermediate grand opening is a very special day for all of us at Austin ISD,” Elizalde said. “It is so exciting to see how these modernized campuses are serving every child, every day. I would like to congratulate Principal Peña, her staff, students and all those who brought this vision to life. Welcome home to your new campus, Blue Jays!”

Located in southeast Austin, the design for Blazier was inspired by the school community’s vision to connect and build relationships among students and their teachers. The result is a community-centered building organized around a centralized cafeteria, performance stage and media center. The building wings connect to the core, providing easy access for improved circulation, increased interactions among students of all grade levels and easy staff supervision.

The Blazier Elementary School Intermediate Site is the first phase of a strategic plan to transform the Blazier campus into an educational village that will serve pre-K through eighth grade. The 132,000-square-foot campus has capacity for 696 students as part of the first phase. Potential expansions of the gym and middle school wing could increase capacity to 1,100 in the future.

Blazier Elementary School Intermediate Site is one of three campuses that have opened this fall as part of the 2017 Bond Program, in addition to the three modernized schools that opened in spring 2020. For more information, visit www.AISDFuture.com.
