AISD hosts 'Chopped' Student Culinary Competition at Whole Foods in partnership with Whole Kids Foundation

Students use Johnson's Backyard Garden cilantro for smoothie challenge

Teams of culinary students from Burnet and Lamar middle schools will be putting their skills to the test for the inaugural Austin ISD Chopped Student Culinary Competition. The participating teams will represent their class by preparing healthy smoothie recipes featuring the "secret ingredient," cilantro. Locally grown cilantro will be provided by Johnson's Backyard Garden.
 
What: Each team will present their smoothies to a panel of judges, who will score the recipes based on taste, appearance and originality. Judges will be Austin ISD Chief Financial Officer Nicole Conley Johnson, AISD Nutrition & Food Services Director Anneliese Tanner and Whole Kids Foundation School Programs Educator and Chef Dan Marek.
The top three teams, as well as the culinary instructors from each school, will be awarded prizes provided by Whole Kids Foundation, VitaMix, Johnson's Backyard Garden and AISD Nutrition & Food Services.
 
When: 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 18
 
Where: Whole Foods Market Outdoor Plaza, 525 N. Lamar Blvd.
 
Access the rooftop outdoor plaza from the stairs located outside the west entrance of Whole Foods Market, or by pressing "PL" in the elevators located in the parking garage, levels P1 or P2.
