Five students from Eastside Memorial High School are preparing themselves for possible careers as doctors by taking classes in the ACC Pre-Med Summer Youth Academy.

Students selected for the academy are 11th-grade students Paulina Duelos Coronado, Joseph Ramirez, Lisbeth Hernandez, Carmen Pacheco and Maria Villafuerte. The students are enrolled in the Health Science program for the upcoming school year.

Through the selection of one to four prep courses in seven core subject areas, students prepare to receive higher grades in medical school pre-requisite courses and learn about careers in the medical field and discover more about the medical field. Students will take courses such as medical surgery, medical terminology, organic chemistry, anatomy, physiology and microbiology. Students are scheduled to take morning and afternoon classes during two summer sessions.

Session I is June 5–29 and Session II is July 3–Aug. 3. Classes will be taken at the ACC Highland Business Center location and courses also include simulation lab experiences and cadaver dissection.

The ACC Pre-Med Summer Youth Academy is designed for junior and senior high school students who are interested in pursuing pre-medical programs in college.

To be considered for the Pre-Med Summer Youth Academy, students needed at least a 3.0 GPA and must have taken biology and chemistry. Students submitted essays to describe their goals in medicine and how the program would help them accomplish those goals. Students also were required to have a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
