To celebrate Youth Art Month, more than 1,700 works of art representing 113 elementary, middle and high schools will be displayed for the public.
When: A reception will be held 1–6 p.m. Sunday, March 5. The exhibit is also open to the public 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 10 a.m.– 3 p.m. Saturdays March 11, 26; and noon–4 p.m. Sunday, March 26. It will be closed for Spring Break March 12–19.
Where: AISD Performing Arts Center, 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.
Free parking is available for the reception in the Performing Arts Center parking garage.
What: Parents, students, teachers and art lovers will gather to view this once-a-year exhibit. The show includes paintings, drawings, printmaking, mixed media, sculptures, collages, weavings, ceramics, photography, jewelry and electronic media. Refreshments will be provided at the reception.
Youth Art Month will also be represented with 10 billboards designed by David Thang, an 11th-grade art student at Travis Early College High School. The billboard theme for this year is “Imagine the Possibilities.”
T-shirts adorned with a student design created by Julian Jose Panchi, an Oak Springs Elementary School second-grade student, are on sale at local schools.
Background: The art show will feature students’ mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills art strands that include perception, response/evaluation, creative expression, history and culture. By studying art styles from prehistoric to modern times, the students have incorporated art history into their own cultural and personal style. Students’ artwork expresses themselves and their traditions.
