AISD Board of Trustees Approves Appointment of New Executive Director of Academics and Social and Emotional Learning

Elisabeth Goodnow to lead Academics and Social and Emotional Learning teams

On Monday, Austin ISD's Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Elisabeth Goodnow to lead the Academics and Social and Emotional Learning teams.

Goodnow most recently served as assistant superintendent for academics and schools at Cedar Hill ISD. In this role, she oversaw district implementation of curriculum, instruction and assessment. She also led improvement efforts that reduced the number of Improvement Required campuses from four to two in one year.

She served as project lead for district innovation efforts that resulted in an increase in student enrollment, and led an effort to improve career and college readiness by increasing student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement exams.

She previously served as assistant director for leadership development at Austin ISD, as interim director of high schools at AISD, academy director for visual and performing arts at Travis High School, principal at The Academy at Hays CISD and as a history and English teacher at Murchison Middle School.

Goodnow has a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin, a master's degree in human services administration from St. Edward's University and a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Trinity University.

Social and emotional learning is a process that helps children develop fundamental skills for life effectiveness. SEL teaches the skills students need to handle themselves, their relationships and their work effectively and ethically.

These skills include recognizing and managing emotions, developing concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions and handling challenging situations constructively and ethically.

AISD is a recognized leader in urban education and one of the first districts in the nation to commit to the development of the whole child by incorporating social and emotional learning. During 2015-16, SEL reached all 130 schools, serving all of the district's 83,000 students.
