AISD Celebrates ‘Wake Up to School Breakfast’ March 7–11

Chef Louis Ortiz to give cooking demo at Blanton Elementary School

Busy weekday mornings can make it challenging for families to find time for a healthy breakfast.  That’s why Austin ISD Nutrition and Food Services encourages more families to take advantage of the choices available for school breakfast.

This year’s National School Breakfast Week theme, “Wake Up to School Breakfast,” is a reminder that school breakfast provides a healthy start for students and fuels them for education and physical activity.

“A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is one way to ensure students are getting the best education they can,” said AISD Nutrition and Food Services Director Anneliese Tanner. “National School Breakfast Week helps us educate parents and students about all the healthy and appealing choices we offer.”

AISD students who eat school breakfast every day during National School Breakfast Week will be entered for a chance win a prize pack. Prizes will be provided by Round Rock Express, Johnson’s Backyard Garden, Vital Farms, Sway Water, That’s It. Fruit Bar, Sustainable Food Center, Camp Gladiator and Do512 Family.

The district serves more than 20,000 breakfast meals daily through the federally funded School Breakfast Program. AISD Food Service team members prepare meals every day that exceed federal nutrition standards—limiting fat, calories and sodium—and encourage students to choose fruits, lean proteins, reduced-fat milk and whole grains offered with school meals.

In support of these initiatives, Austin Mayor Steve Adler proclaimed March 7–11 National School Breakfast Week.

In addition to the districtwide contest, three events will be held in support of National School Breakfast Week:
