AISD Trustee Jayme Mathias Elected to TASB Board of Directors

The Texas Association of School Boards has announced that it has elected Austin ISD Trustee Jayme Mathias to a one-year term on the TASB Board of Directors. He will represent TASB Region 13, position A.

TASB is a nonprofit association serving public school districts. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.2 million students.

Mathias was elected to AISD’s Board of Trustees in November 2012 and elected secretary in November 2012 and January 2015. A product of and firm believer in public education, he earned two undergraduate degrees, four graduate degrees and a doctorate in philosophy.

A 15-year resident of Austin, Mathias is a certified instructor of secondary foreign languages and taught all levels of high school Spanish before going on to teach at the graduate and doctoral levels. He also serves as pastor of Holy Family American Catholic Church in south Austin.

Mathias’ passion for education spurred him to co-found three learning centers in East Austin, including La FUENTE Learning Center, which has hosted the district’s DELTA program since 2003.

Previously active in various neighborhood associations and on numerous boards, he presently serves on boards including the Blackland Community Development Corporation, New Journalism Project, Child-Friendly Faith Project and the St. John XXIII Theological Institute.

A member of the Leadership TASB Class of 2015, Mathias has participated in the Texas Institute for School Boards and has twice represented AISD at the annual TASB Delegate Assembly.
