The budget for Austin ISD, the fifth-largest school district in Texas, is more than $1 billion. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of the property taxes collected by the district go to the state. This amount will increase to one-third over time as property appraisal values increase. The vast majority of AISD's general fund, 87 percent of the budget, is allocated toward salaries for its 12,000 employees. The budget supports AISD's approximately 85,000 students at 129 campuses.
