Doss Elementary School student volunteers will be teaching other students how to have a healthier lunch this Friday during Salad Bar Day. The school recently launched a made-to-order salad bar, which includes fresh, locally grown foods.
What: School volunteers will lead other students through the salad bar during lunch.
When: 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Friday, April 10
Where: Doss cafeteria, 7005 Northledge Drive
Background: The purpose of Salad Bar Day is to educate students about how to use a made-to-order salad bar and also to encourage students to make healthy food choices. Salad Bar Day reinforces TEKS and encourages healthy food choices.
AISD Food Service participates with Farm to Table and the Farm to School Programs, which provide fresh locally grown produce to AISD Food Service that is served daily on the cafeteria lines.
In January, Doss Cafeteria Manager Michelle Korns and AISD Food Service Area Supervisor Wendi Caudill began implementing a made-to-order salad bar within the cafeteria line at Doss Elementary. Made-to-order salads qualify as entree that is a “reimbursable meal,” which allows for those on the free and reduced-price lunch program to participate. Teachers, staff and parents are also able to purchase made-to-order salads at lunchtime.
