Professionals from the Austin area will present their careers to Blackshear Elementary Fine Arts Academy students during the school’s annual Role Model Day.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Blackshear alumna and Austin City Councilmember Ora Houston, and Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt are among the professionals attending.
What: The school’s second- through fifth-graders will hear professionals discuss their jobs and reinforce the message to stay in school, set goals and work hard to achieve them.
Banking, legal, medical, law enforcement, print/broadcast media; and city and county governmental departments are among professions represented. Austin Police Department’s mounted patrol, K-9 Unit, a police car and helicopter will be on hand, as well as the Austin Fire Department’s fire truck and ambulance. All are subject to leave at a moment’s notice, if necessary.
When: 9–11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28
Where: Blackshear Fine Arts Academy, 1712 E. 11th St., gymnasium
Background: For 16 years, community volunteer Margarine Beaman, with the “I Can” Project, has organized Role Model Day at Blackshear to share career options with students. The students will spend approximately 10 minutes with each role model, hearing about their job and asking questions. There will be more than 35 tables in the gymnasium and students rotate through as many tables as they can during the time allotted.
