This weekend, Austin Independent School District will hold a dedication ceremony for the Jaime D. Padron Elementary School.

What: A dedication ceremony, featuring remarks by AISD Board of Trustees President Vincent Torres, AISD District 3 Trustee Ann Teich, Interim Superintendent Paul Cruz, Austin Police Department Chief of Police Art Acevedo and family and friends of Officer Padron.

When: 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9

Guided tours of the school will be available beginning at 1 p.m.

Where: Jaime D. Padron Elementary School, 2011 W. Rundberg Lane

Background: Jaime D. Padron Elementary School was formerly a manufacturing warehouse facility that was renovated into the district’s largest elementary school with 57 classrooms. The school is the district’s first adaptive reuse project, which was opened in August.

The total purchase and construction costs, funded by the AISD 2008 Bond Program, totaled $30.45 million.

The elementary school’s roof features a 245-kilowatt solar array. It is designed to achieve at least a three-star rating from the Austin Energy Green Building Program and Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The school was named for Officer Jaime D. Padron, a U.S. Marine veteran, who served in both the Austin Police Department and the San Angelo Police Department. He died in April of 2012 while serving in the line of duty for the Austin Police Department, leaving behind two daughters. He was awarded the Law Enforcement Purple Heart with Valor by the Austin Police Department.
