Reagan Area Schools Partner to Expand Community School Efforts

Funding will expand turnaround success to more campuses.

October 7, 2014—On Tuesday, Oct. 7, partners of Reagan High School and Webb Middle School will gather to announce an expanded partnership with Education Austin and Austin Voices for Education and Youth to support community school efforts, with funding support from the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers Innovation Fund. Members of the media are invited for the announcement, followed by discussion with community members about the community school initiative.

From near closure in 2007, both Reagan and Webb have experienced dramatic academic turnarounds using community school strategies, that include increased social and health supports for families, a rigorous Early College High School program, and shared planning by parents, community and teachers. Both schools have received statewide and national attention as models

Who: School administrators from Reagan, Webb and other local campuses; Interim Supt. Dr. Paul Cruz;  members of the AISD Board of Trustees; city and county officials; Education Austin and Austin Voices for Education and Youth; Presidents of the Texas AFT and Texas State Teachers Association; local students and parents; community partners, including Communities in Schools, United Way, Council for At-Risk Youth and others;of sustainable turnaround. The new funding will help expand community school strategies to 13 other campuses that feed into Webb and Reagan.

What: Presentation of funding, with speeches by two students and one parent, as well as Reagan and Webb principals, AISD Superintendent and leaders of Education Austin and Austin Voices. Short conversation with community partners of how and why a community school works. Reagan High School drum line and other student groups present.
