AUSTIN, Texas—Austin ISD celebrates Pride Week Sept. 15–20 with the “State of Denial” photo series, candid conversations with LGBT champions and a statement of support from the district’s leadership.

What:  Pride Week kick-off celebration with an exhibit by Jo Ann Santangelo, whose “State of Denial” photo essay has been featured in the Texas Observer. Santangelo’s photographs feature marriages whose unions are legally recognized outside their home state of Texas.  Interim Superintendent Paul Cruz will deliver a statement of support, followed by a panel discussion with LGBT champions and civil rights leaders.

When: 4–5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15

Where: AISD Board Auditorium, 1111 W. 6th St.

Background: AISD is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive environment for LGBT students, families and staff members. In addition to earning distinction as the largest No Place for Hate district in the nation, AISD has developed district-wide, anti-bullying programs, the LGBT community advisory committee and gay-straight alliances at district high schools. AISD also partners with the Austin Police Department, Out Youth and the Anti-defamation League to create secure, inclusive school environments.

Austin Pride Week began in 1990 to celebrate the city's diverse culture and community. Pride Week is recognized in cities worldwide and is a time dedicated to celebrating the LGBT community with initiatives that focus on a range of topics including education, advocacy, equal rights and anti-bullying. The week is one component of the gay pride movement, which was largely formalized after the Stonewall, NY, riots of 1969.
