Media Advisory: Media Lunch and Learn on AISD Police Investigations

District offers opportunity for media to learn about AISD police investigations and processes

AUSTIN, Texas—Austin ISD continues its Lunch and Learn series for the media with an introduction to AISD’s police department investigations and processes, including the recent arrest of a Walnut Creek Elementary School teacher, who was teaching at the summer school program at Reilly.

What:  Eric Mendez, chief of AISD’s police department, will provide media with information about the district’s criminal investigations unit and how the district works with area agencies, law enforcement officials and the judicial system on criminal cases. The district’s counseling services team also will be available to provide information as needed.

When: Noon to 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, June 25. Lunch will be provided, beginning at 11:45 a.m.

Where: Carruth Administration Center, Suite C150, 1111 W. Sixth St.

Background: After providing an off-camera overview of AISD’s police investigations, Chief Mendez will offer an update on the criminal charges against Alfredo Andrade-Gaytan, who was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child Friday, June 13, following an investigation by AISD Police. Subsequently, the district served the teacher notice of termination.

AISD has asked families to contact the police department with questions, concerns or information relevant to the on-going investigation. AISD police notified district officials that Andrade-Gaytan was arrested on two charges of indecency with a child Saturday, June 21.

AISD is committed to providing timely information to the community and has provided regular updates to the media about the cases during the past two weeks.

Please note that AISD is operating on a four-day work week and will be closed Friday, June 27. In addition, the district will be closed June 30-July 4. The district will continue to provide the media with updates as needed after the district resumes summer efficiency hours Monday, July 7.

AISD’s communications team has shared information about the Lunch and Learn session and the district’s summer schedule with media who covered yesterday’s update from the AISD police department.


 

Post-lunch filming opportunity: The Lunch and Learn session about AISD police investigations is an informal, off-camera conversation among officers and reporters. Although photographers are invited to join the lunch, there only will be interview and filming opportunities after the lunch conversation concludes.
