Media Advisory: AISD Celebrates Juneteenth at Annual Parade

District joins Greater East Austin Youth Association in march

AUSTIN, Texas—Austin ISD staff members, students and the Austin community will celebrate Juneteenth at this year’s parade.

What: AISD team members and members of the Board of Trustees will lead the AISD All-Star band in the parade.

When: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21

Where: AISD participants will meet at 8 a.m. at Kealing Middle School, 1607 Pennsylvania Ave., to take a school bus to the starting zone. Parade will begin at the intersection of Comal St. and MLK Boulevard.

Background: Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday commemorating the day Texas learned President Lincoln declared the end of slavery. The official holiday is June 19. The Greater East Austin Youth Association, the City of Austin and Austin Parks and Recreation sponsor the parade. Download the parade route.
