Media Advisory: News Media Access to Schools Limited During Final Week of Classes, Examinations

Media relations team will have limited office hours, availability during graduation ceremonies June 3–7

Austin, Texas—The Austin Independent School District is preparing for the end of the school year and graduation ceremonies next week.

The last day of classes for AISD’s more than 120 schools is Thursday, June 5. To reduce distractions and help students focus on their end-of-the-year commitments and final examinations, the news media’s access to campuses may be limited during the week of May 30. The district also will continue to limit visitors’ access to schools during student assessment periods.

AISD reminds media to please inform the communications team about plans to film outside a campus as a courtesy. In turn, the media relations team will provide the school with a courtesy update. At times, the media’s presence at a school may raise questions among parents, who contact the school because they are concerned a crisis or critical incident has occurred on the campus.

AISD requests media to please set up across the street, remain on public sidewalks, respect parents’ requests, avoid filming students' faces and refrain from interfering with the drop-off of pick-up process.

AISD also will host 15 graduation ceremonies Tuesday, June 3, through Saturday, June 7. The district’s media relations team will have limited office hours and availability and will be available to assist reporters during graduation ceremonies at the Erwin Center and the LBJ Auditorium at the University of Texas at Austin. Please submit requests for support as soon as possible.

As always, AISD appreciates the news media’s cooperation.
