AISD and APIE Honor Hundreds of Community Volunteers for Service to Students, Schools Tonight

School communities rely on volunteer support from PTAs, businesses

Austin, Texas—Tonight, Austin ISD and Austin Partners in Education will honor hundreds of volunteers at Celebrate, which recognizes community members who serve the district’s schools in a range of roles, including reading tutors and classroom coaches.

What: Celebrate, an annual event honoring AISD volunteers. The district and APIE will present such awards as PTA of the Year, Partner in Education Coordinator of the Year and APIE Business Partner of the Year. In addition, parent ambassadors, community organizations, school business partners and other volunteers will be recognized.

When: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1

Where: For the City Center, 500 E. St. Johns Ave. Doors open and reception begins at 5:30 p.m.

Background: Volunteers play an integral role in AISD by committing their time, talent and energy to support students and strengthen Austin schools. APIE has placed more than 950 volunteers in classrooms throughout the district for weekly academic support. Another 750 APIE mentors work with students individually. In addition, more than 5,000 volunteer background checks have been processed for other campus volunteer roles such as library assistants and field trip chaperones.

Celebrate will include student performances, guest presenters and prizes. The City of Austin serves as a signature sponsor for the event.
