AUSTIN, Texas—Lanier High School, along with its community, neighbors and sponsors will officially unveil the Lanier Community Garden with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Who: City and county representatives, rotary members from the Monterrey Obispado Mexico and Northwest Austin Rotary Clubs, Austin ISD administrators and school board representative, Lanier staff, students, community and members of the Mexican Consulate and Multicultural Refugee Coalition.
When: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17
Where: Lanier High School, 1201 Payton Gin Road
Background: The Lanier organic, community garden was made possible as part of a $24,000 green grant received through collaboration between the Northwest Austin Rotary Club and the Rotary Club Monterrey Obispado, in Mexico. The purpose of the garden is to educate students, parents and the community on the importance, feasibility and cost savings of growing and eating healthy, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Lanier agriculture students and families from the Multicultural Refugee Coalition are the first garden tenants, but more plots will be available for members of the Lanier community.
