Statement from Board President Vincent Torres

AUSTIN, Texas—The Austin Independent School District released the following statement from Vincent Torres, president of the Board of Trustees, about Superintendent Meria Carstarphen being named as the new superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to congratulate Superintendent Meria Carstarphen and wish her the very best as she leaves Austin to lead Atlanta Public Schools and begin a new chapter.

We also would like to thank Dr. Carstarphen for her five years of leadership and service to AISD to move our district forward—from achieving an all-time high graduation rate to maximizing dwindling resources wisely to ensure Austin schools offer all of our students the quality education they deserve to prepare for college, career and life.

Working with more than 12,000 teachers, principals and team members, she has helped make AISD a nationally recognized school district for its commitment to educating the whole child and every child. The Board of Trustees is committed to continuing the positive progress made during Dr. Carstarphen’s tenure and to supporting our schools as they work to increase students’ performance.

Tomorrow, the board plans to appoint an interim superintendent to lead the district until a permanent superintendent is hired. The board also will take action on a request for proposals to select of a firm to assist in the search process. This Special Board Meeting starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, and is open to the public.

As we begin our search for a permanent superintendent, we will keep our community informed of our progress and involved in the selection of a strong leader for our district. Please visit the district’s website for up-to-date information about the search process.
