AUSTIN, Texas— A dedication ceremony will be held in the new sculpture atrium at Lamar Fine Arts Academy, featuring the unveiling of “The Birds”—a sculpture that has been donated to Austin ISD by the Umlauf Family Partnership.
Who: Vincent Torres, AISD Board of Trustees president;George Llewellyn, principal of Lamar Fine Arts Academy; and Carla Umlauf, granddaughter of Charles Umlauf
What: A small reception and art exhibit, followed by a dedication in the courtyard with performances by the Chamber Orchestra, Scottie Singers and Jazz Factory.
Where: Lamar Fine Arts Academy, sculpture atrium in the courtyard, 6201 Wynona Ave.
When: Friday, March 28, 8:30-10 a.m.
Background: The series of bronze-cast birds, sculpted by Charles Umlauf in 1960 for the Spirit of Flight fountain at Dallas’ Love Field Airport, was one of the artist’s first large-scale public installations. Located just off the library wing, the sculpture atrium will be transformed into an outdoor classroom space. It will serve as a visible reminder of the significant impact arts education has on the future.
