Austin, TX—The Austin Independent School District will host a public hearing meeting to discuss single-sex schools in District 1 at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, in the Board Auditorium at the Carruth Administration Center, 1111 West Sixth Street.
AISD is considering combining the attendance areas at the James E. Pearce College Preparatory Academy and Gus Garcia Middle School to facilitate the design of two, single-sex middle schools. The design is one of the district's preliminary, potential 2013-14 Annual Academic and Facility Recommendations to be considered by the Board of Trustees in late August.
If the proposal is approved, male students would attend one campus and female students would attend the other campus. The district would assign other school options to parents who choose not to enroll their children in a single-sex school.
