Superintendent Meria Carstarphen has named Alejandro (Alex) Sanchez as the Austin Independent School District's Director of Public Relations and Multicultural Outreach. The official appointment is pending approval by the Board of Trustees at its Monday, May 23, Regular Meeting.
Mr. Sanchez was formerly the Director of Communications for Denver Public Schools. Two years ago, he assumed the role of Director of Multicultural Outreach for Denver Public Schools, launching an innovative new office to better connect with non-English speaking communities through the use of linguistically and culturally effective communication strategies, including an award-winning radio show for the Spanish-speaking community. He has experience working in labor negotiations, successful bond campaigns, and the private sector.
"I am confident that Alex Sanchez has the skills and experience to facilitate effective community engagement districtwide. He will work at the local, state and national level, to ensure that the Austin School District is recognized for its outstanding students and staff, and he will work to communicate the great accomplishments that take place every day in AISD," Dr. Carstarphen said.
Mr. Sanchez will officially start in Austin on July 1, but plans are underway, working with the Denver Public School District, to make an effective transition beginning immediately.
"I am looking forward to coming to Austin and working with AISD staff, students, and parents, as well as the Austin community as a whole, to promote a great school district that's getting even better," Sanchez said. "This is a terrific community, and I'm delighted to join it."
