1 big thing: District proposing Election Day as student holiday
|
📅 Austin ISD administration is proposing that Election Day be a holiday on the 2022–23 and 2023–24 academic calendars.
-
If approved by the board, Nov. 8, 2022, and Nov. 7, 2023, would be a holiday for all students and a professional development day for all staff
Why it matters: Making this day a holiday would ensure that more of our staff and students of voting age would be able to get to the polls and make their voices heard.
What’s next: The board will vote on this proposition at its Sept. 29 meeting.

2. 👷 2017 Bond work more than 85% complete
|
We made history with the 2017 Bond, building 19 new or modernized schools to bring improved, innovative learning spaces to students at Menchaca, Casis and Sanchez Elementary Schools and the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, to name just a few.
Why it matters: It wasn’t just new schools. The bond included major upgrades to critical systems like HVAC and plumbing, plus technology and sustainability—so every student benefited.
By the numbers: Watch our “Bond by the Numbers” video to learn more about how we invested your tax dollars and the impact they had on our schools.
-
19 modernizations complete or underway.
-
11 modernized schools expected to receive LEED & AEGB certification.
-
133 targeted projects complete.
-
17% (105) reduction in portables since 2017.
Dive deeper: Visit AustinISD2017Bond.org for the latest updates on our progress and a full list of 2017 Bond projects.

3. Austin ISD wins Javits Grant
|
|
Austin ISD is one of four schools in the country to win a prestigious grant that will help the district narrow or close an equity gap in Gifted and Talented programming.
What they’re saying: “The grant enables us to hire more staff to provide more targeted and directed support to our Title 1 campuses, while also knowing all students across the district will benefit from this implementation,” said Dr. Elizabeth Severance, Director of Advanced Academics.
Why it matters: The Javits Grant will allow Austin ISD to basically double the size of its Gifted and Talented or GT team.
-
The team will add specialists who will focus on closing the equity gap through non-verbal assessments, increased family outreach, and improved professional learning.
-
The grant will also enable Austin ISD to implement a universal screener for second-graders starting next school year.
By the numbers: 13% of Austin ISD’s students are tagged as gifted & talented, but only 27% of them as economically disadvantaged.
What’s next: Email advancedacademics@austinisd.org for details or to learn more about GT screenings and services at these two virtual meetings:
-
Monday, September 19 at 6-7 p.m.
-
Tuesday, September 20 at noon–1 p.m.

4. Act by Oct. 31 to partake in Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
|
Do you have a federal student loan? 📒💰
If so, you may be able to benefit from temporary changes made to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Why it matters: if you haven’t applied for the PSLF, you need to consolidate your non-direct federal student loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan before October 31, 2022 to get the benefits.
This means that if you qualify, you will lock in the benefits of the waiver and start accruing credit toward PSLF.
The bottom line: These steps can help you save thousands of dollars on your student loans.
