Critical reminder about school bus safety
Our hearts are heavy as we mourn with our neighbors in Hays CISD and everyone affected by the tragic bus accident in Bastrop County.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2022, seven people were killed and 51 seriously injured in the 2,305 crashes involving a Texas school bus.
We’ve gotten some questions about bus safety and we want to reassure you that all 551 Austin ISD buses are equipped with seatbelts.
Families and staff asked to remind students of the importance of wearing their seatbelts at all times.
Drivers should follow these guidelines from the Texas Department of Transportation for sharing the road safely with school buses:
-
Follow at a safe distance, keeping in mind that school buses make frequent stops.
-
Always stay alert for children around buses and remember that they may not always look for vehicles before crossing the street.
-
Stop for flashing red lights or a stop sign on a school bus regardless of which direction you’re headed. Continue once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing, or the bus driver signals it’s okay to pass.
Yes, and…Violations can lead to a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense.
The bottom line: Thousands of families rely on school buses to transport their kids safely to and from school and events. We need support from our entire community to keep our routes safe.
