Hello Austin ISD Staff,
Happy New Year! I hope the break gave you the pause you needed to feel relaxed and ready for the new semester. There is so much to look forward to in 2024! 👀
January is School Board Appreciation Month! 🍎 Our elected board of trustees plays a crucial role in overseeing our schools. Not to mention these are unpaid positions! Check out our next regular board meeting, get to know your board members and learn how you can support the great work happening in Austin ISD!
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Austin ISD staff and students are off next Monday, Jan. 15. 📅 MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage volunteerism in your community. Get involved here in Austin by participating in the annual Community March, Festival and Food Drive. 📣
Let the countdown to Spring Break begin… 9 weeks!
🎭 Break a leg!

1 big thing: We have our eye on the forecast
Winter weather is in the forecast next week and we’re monitoring how it may affect Austin ISD schools and offices.
Why it matters: Cold and icy conditions could cause us to delay or cancel district schools, as well as affect electricity and other utilities.
What we’re doing: We work closely with meteorologists and other local entities to monitor the weather and make final decisions.
-
We’ll make every effort to make a decision as early as possible to give employees and families enough time to make plans.
-
We’ll send communication of a delay or closure via email, robocall, website, social media, and local media.
Be sure to prepare: Before the cold front hits, be sure to check in on your winter weather supplies. Even if you don’t need them this time, Texas weather can be unpredictable.
The bottom line: A cold snap is coming, and we’re keeping an eye on it.

Embracing the legacy of MLK Jr.
On Monday, January 15 the district will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, to honor the legacy and contributions of Dr. King to push for racial equity in America
What they’re saying: “When our youth know the things of the past, it helps them make sense of the systems that have been put in place that show up today…I think it's important for us to know our history in order to innovate,” said Statia Paschel, Director of Social Emotional Learning and Cultural Proficiency and Inclusiveness. “I feel that our history is a story of what we presently see.”
Serve your community: Paschel, who is also part of the Austin ISD Black History Month Planning Team, encourages everyone to celebrate MLK day by finding ways to serve others and make contributions to their community.
Participate in your community: Every year, the city of Austin holds its community march in honor of MLK, Jr. This year the march will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 15.
Students from Crockett Early College High School and Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy will be taking part in the festivities organized by Austin Public Libraries. Activities are scheduled from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Friday, January 12 at the Central Library.
