Where did the year go? Only 19 days left!

I want to update you on where we‘re at with developing our 2024-25 Budget. As part of this budget process, we’ve had to make some difficult decisions. In Austin ISD we recognize that everyone in the organization serves a purpose, and we are committed to minimizing the impact of our budget reductions on campuses.

We know that teaching and learning are our core functions, and if we need to work smarter or differently at the Central Office, we’re committed to doing so because our students come first. To that end, we have found ways to redistribute and refocus some of our work in all departments.

We first worked to streamline operations and find efficiencies by reducing and eliminating contracts and software, as well as tightening controls on overtime. But ultimately, with roughly 87% of our budget going toward people, we couldn’t find all the savings in non-staffing expenses — we had to look at centralized positions.

We primarily focused on eliminating vacant positions but also had to consider positions currently filled. We looked holistically across departments to determine how to make cuts that would still allow our teams to provide our campuses with the best services and support. Ultimately, we made the difficult decision to eliminate 41 centralized positions, 12 of which are currently filled.

We value the contributions of each and every person who has chosen to dedicate their energy and talents to our district, and we are doing everything in our power to approach this process as thoughtfully and compassionately as possible.

Austin ISD is not alone in these budget challenges — this is happening all over Texas. Our team is committed to doing what’s necessary to provide a high-quality education for all students.

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet

Monday, April 29
Today will start with a meeting with the Austin ISD Police and the Office of Civil Rights. We are one of three districts visiting with OCR so that we can learn together. I will then lead our weekly Senior Leadership Meeting where we will work through feedback from our board on the budget and discuss work related to the District Scorecard. Then we’ll prepare for this week’s presentations and meetings. My afternoon is set aside for problem-solving and collaboration with different groups within the organization. In the evening I am going to try and make my daughters last track meet of the season.

Tuesday, April 30
I’m excited to start my morning at Ridgetop Elementary, where I’ll be a Dia de los Ninos guest reader. As of now, I’m still trying to choose a book—let me know your suggestions. Then, I’ll head back to the office for one-on-one meetings, followed by a Board Governance Meeting. In the afternoon, I’ll prepare for upcoming events — Salute, the Austin ISD Retirement Dinner and Graduation! Then, I’ll meet with Austin Area Public School Administrators for our monthly meeting.

I’ll end the day speaking at Austin in Common, where I’ll share our work with the whole community.

Wednesday, May 1
I’ll start my day with our principals where I’ll provide an update on our budget process, new Scorecard development, and some recognitions.

Last week was a little busy, so I set aside some time today to take our amazing administrative assistants out to lunch! They are the glue that holds so much together; we’d be lost without them! Rosa Palacios, Elsa Perez, Laura Orosco, and Melody Byrd — Thank you, thank you, thank you — for all that you do to keep the system running. You are amazing!

After lunch, I’ll return to the office to meet with our communication team about upcoming projects. After that I’ll meet with St. Edward’s University to discuss student mental health and how we can partner to support our students. I’ll end the day having one-on-ones with Chief Steenport (Operations) and Chief Hawley (Organizational Transformation).

Thursday, May 2
This morning I’ll attend our UT-Austin ISD Collaborative end-of-year meeting. This group has met throughout the year as thought partners around systems improvement. We are very grateful for this partnership. I’ll then have a 1:1 with Chief Ramos (Finance). I have some strategic planning time set aside — after all, the 2024-25 school year is just around the corner. Then, I’ll meet with our Employee Effectiveness team to discuss how we differentiate support for our campuses. Later in the afternoon, I’ll attend our Executive Leadership Team. This year's ELT meetings have been amazing and helped us strategically align our work across departments. I’ll end the day at William Elementary for the kick-off of their campus improvement thanks to the 2022 Bond Program.

Friday, May 3
I’ll spend the first part of my day sharing our Austin ISD staff housing and support initiatives. This is a unique strategy that I deeply believe in. We have the ability to support our staff in many ways, and housing is often discussed, but with how expensive it is to live in Austin, we have to do all that we can. My wife and I will attend the Gran Show de Primavera: Que Siga at Austin High, Ballet Folklorico in the evening! If you have time, come celebrate our incredible students with me!

BONUS DAY - Saturday, May 4
We have so many great things happening today and I’m going to try to get to as many of them as I can.

I’ll start my day at the Community Love Hub at Mendez Middle School. It’s going to be a great event with lots of ways for our community and students to get involved. You can read more about it on the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center website. This wonderful partnership was brought together by Trustee Zapata and the ESB MACC. The MACC is dedicated to the preservation, creation, presentation and promotion of Mexican American cultural arts and heritage.

I’ll then head to the Cook Elementary School Construction Kick-Off event as part of the 2022 Bond Program.

After that I’ll attend the State of Black Education Summit at the Norris Conference Center.

Later in the afternoon, I’ll be at Burger Stadium to check out the “Clash of Texas” track meet to support Coach Sherman and the Austin Striders Track Team. I spent many summers in middle school and high School running track with the Austin Striders, and they helped me prepare for college and life. I learned a lot of life lessons from Coach Harvey and Howard Ware, who founded the Striders.

¿A dónde se fue el año? ¡Solo quedan 19 días!

Quiero actualizarlos sobre dónde vamos en la elaboración de nuestro presupuesto para 2024-25. Como parte de este proceso del presupuesto, hemos tenido que tomar algunas decisiones difíciles. En el Austin ISD reconocemos que todos en la organización tienen un propósito y estamos comprometidos a minimizar el impacto de nuestras reducciones presupuestarias en las escuelas.

Sabemos que la enseñanza y el aprendizaje son nuestras funciones básicas y necesitamos trabajar más inteligentemente o diferente en las Oficinas Centrales, nos hemos comprometido a hacerlo porque nuestros estudiantes son lo primero. Con ese fin, hemos encontrado formas de redistribuir y reenfocar parte de nuestro trabajo en todos los departamentos.

Primero trabajamos para optimizar las operaciones y encontrar eficiencias mediante la reducción y eliminación de contratos y software, así como controles más estrictos sobre las horas extras. Pero en última instancia, con aproximadamente el 87% de nuestro presupuesto destinado a las personas, no pudimos encontrar todos los ahorros en gastos no relacionados con el personal, tuvimos que revisar los puestos centralizados.

Primero consideramos eliminar los puestos vacantes, pero también tuvimos que considerar puestos que ya están ocupados. Analizamos de manera holística todos los departamentos para determinar cómo hacer recortes que todavía permitieran a nuestros equipos brindar a nuestras escuelas los mejores servicios y apoyo. A fin de cuentas, tuvimos que tomar la difícil decisión de eliminar 41 puestos centralizados, 12 de los cuales están actualmente ocupados.

Valoramos las contribuciones de todas y cada una de las personas que han elegido dedicar su energía y talentos a nuestro distrito, y estamos haciendo todo lo que está a nuestro a nuestro alcance para abordar este proceso de la manera más reflexiva y compasiva posible.

El Austin ISD no está solo en estos desafíos del presupuesto, esto está sucediendo en todo Texas. Nuestro equipo está comprometido con hacer lo que sea necesario para brindarles a todos los estudiantes una educación de alta calidad.

Amo al Austin ISD y a nuestra ciudad. Somos fuertes y resilientes y lo superaremos juntos.

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré

Lunes, 29 de abril
Hoy empezaré con una junta con la Policía del Austin ISD y la Oficina de Derechos Civiles (OCR, por sus siglas en inglés). Somos uno de los tres distritos que visitan la OCR, de esa manera podemos aprender juntos. A continuación, dirigiré nuestra junta semanal de liderazgo de alto rango en donde trabajaremos sobre los comentarios de nuestra mesa directiva respecto al presupuesto y discutiremos sobre el trabajo relacionado con la Tarjeta de Resultados del distrito. Después nos prepararemos para las presentaciones y juntas de la semana. Mi tarde está reservada para la resolución de problemas y colaboración con diferentes grupos dentro de la organización. En la tarde, voy a intentar llegar a la última competencia de atletismo de la temporada de mis hijas.

Martes, 30 de abril
Me siento emocionado de comenzar mi mañana en la Primaria Ridgetop donde seré un lector invitado por el Día de los Niños. Hasta el momento, todavía estoy tratando de elegir un libro, díganme sus sugerencias. Después, regresaré a la oficina para las juntas individuales, seguida por una junta con la Junta de Gobernanza. ¡En la tarde, me prepararé para próximos eventos, como Salute, Cena de Jubilados del Austin ISD y Graduaciones! En seguida me reuniré con los Administradores de Escuelas Públicas de la Zona Metropolitana de Austin para nuestra junta mensual.

Terminaré el día hablando en Austin in Common, donde compartiré nuestro trabajo con toda la comunidad.

Miércoles, 1 de mayo
Empezaré mi día con nuestros directores donde daré una actualización sobre el proceso de nuestro presupuesto, la elaboración de la Tarjeta de Resultados y algunos reconocimientos.

La semana pasada estuvo un poco ocupada, por eso, ¡separé un poco de tiempo hoy para llevar a nuestras maravillosas asistentes administrativas a almorzar! Ellas son quienes mantienen todo en orden; ¡estaríamos perdidos sin ellas! Rosa Palacios, Elsa Pérez, Laura Orosco, y Melody Byrd, gracias, gracias, gracias por todo lo que hacen para mantener el funcionamiento del sistema. ¡Son maravillosas!

Después del almuerzo, regresaré a la oficina para reunirme con nuestro equipo de comunicación sobre próximos proyectos. Después de eso, me reuniré con St. Edward’s University para discutir sobre la salud mental estudiantil y cómo podemos asociarnos para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes. Terminaré el día teniendo juntas individuales con el jefe Steenport (Operaciones) y el jefe Hawley (Transformación Organizacional).

Jueves, 2 de mayo
Esta mañana asistiré a nuestra junta de fin de año de la Colaboración UT-Austin ISD. Este grupo se ha reunido durante el año como socios de opinión en torno a la mejora de los sistemas. Estamos agradecidos por esta sociedad. Después tendré una junta individual con el jefe Ramos (Finanzas). Tengo apartado un poco de tiempo de planificación estratégica, después de todo, el fin del ciclo escolar 2024-25 está a la vuelta de la esquina. Después, me reuniré con el equipo de Eficiencia del Personal para discutir cómo diferenciamos el apoyo para nuestras escuelas. Después en la tarde, asistiré a nuestro Equipo de Liderazgo Ejecutivo (ELT, por sus siglas en inglés). Este año la juntas de ELT han sido increíbles y nos ayudaron a alinear estratégicamente nuestro trabajo entre departamentos. Terminaré el día en la Primaria Williams para el arranque del mejoramiento de su escuela gracias al programa del Bono de 2022.

Viernes, 3 de mayo
Usaré la primera parte de mi día compartiendo nuestras iniciativas de apoyo y vivienda para el personal del Austin ISD. Esta es una estrategia única en la que creo profundamente. Tenemos la habilidad de apoyar a nuestro personal de diferentes maneras y se discute frecuentemente sobre la vivienda, pero con lo caro que es vivir en Austin, tenemos que hacer todo lo que podamos. Mi esposa y yo asistiremos a la Gran Presentación de Primavera: ¡Que Siga del Ballet Folclórico de la Preparatoria Austin en la tarde! Si tienen tiempo, ¡vengan a celebrar a nuestros increíbles estudiantes conmigo!

DÍA ADICIONAL – sábado, 4 de mayo
Tenemos tantas cosas grandiosas sucediendo hoy y voy a tratar de estar en las más que pueda.

Comenzaré mi día en el centro comunitario de amor en la Escuela Secundaria Méndez. Va a ser un gran evento con muchas maneras en que pueden participar nuestra comunidad y estudiantes. Pueden leer más al respecto en el sitio web del Centro Cultural Mexicoamericano Emma S. Barrientos (ESB MACC, por sus siglas en inglés). Esta maravillosa sociedad la formó la miembro de la mesa directiva, Zapata y el ESB MACC. El MACC se dedica a la preservación, creación, presentación y promoción de la artes culturales y la herencia mexicoamericana.

Después iré a el evento de arranque de la construcción de la Escuela Primaria Cook como parte del programa del bono de 2022.

Después de eso asistiré a Cumbre Estatal de Educadores de Raza Negra en el Centro de Conferencias Norris.

Después en la tarde, estaré en el Estadio Burger para para ver la competencia de atletismo "Clash of Texas" para apoyar al entrenador Sherman y al equipo de atletismo Austin Striders. Me la paso muchos veranos en la pista de atletismo de secundaria y preparatoria con los Austin Striders, y ellos me ayudaron a prepararme para la educación superior y la vida. Aprendí muchas de las lecciones de vida del entrenador Harvey y Howard Ware, quien fundó los Striders.
