Happy Friday, everyone!
I’m Gabriella Beker, and I’ll be taking over this issue of the Leader Letter. I’ve been a Community Engagement Coordinator with the district for a couple of years now, so many of you may already know me. If we haven’t connected yet, I hope to see you at one of the upcoming engagement opportunities you will learn about below!
Let’s get to it…

1 big thing: District proposing Election Day as student holiday
|
Austin ISD administration is proposing that Election Day be a holiday on the 2022–23 and 2023–24 academic calendars.
-
If approved by the board, Nov. 8, 2022, and Nov. 7, 2023, would be a holiday for all students and a professional development day for all staff.
Why it matters: Making this day a holiday would ensure that more of our staff and students of voting age would be able to get to the polls and make their voices heard.
What’s next: The board will vote on this proposition at its Sept. 29 meeting.

2. Benefits of modernized schools
|
More and more research is showing that modernized schools improve student outcomes and teacher retention.
Why it matters: Studies show that poor facility quality reduces student attendance rates and teacher job satisfaction, and traditional classroom setups make students less actively engaged in learning.
Go deeper: Check out this research compiled by the ReBuild America’s School Infrastructure Coalition (BASIC) about the impact of school facility conditions on educational equity.

3. Austin ISD resumes repurposing process
|
This week we began our second series of engagements around the repurposing of the Anita Ferrales Coy, former Pease Elementary School and former Rosedale School sites.
Why it matters: These potential new uses could address issues in our community such as affordable housing, teacher housing and shortages of early childhood services while also creating more public green spaces.
What’s next: Join us at one of the upcoming community conversations or complete our survey by Sunday, Oct. 9.
