I want to start this edition of Appitol News by thanking our principals during the Austin ISD Principal Appreciation Week. 🎉

1 Big Thing: Board resumes conversations about superintendent hiring process
The Austin ISD Board of Trustees is resuming conversations about the superintendent profile and hiring process.
Why it matters: The board will seek community input to determine if there is a need for a nationwide search process in the spring.
The backstory: On March 30, trustees voted to extend the contract of Interim Superintendent Matias Segura for a year and pause the superintendent search.
What's next: Interim Superintendent Segura’s contract is currently set to expire June 30.

Local foods take school lunches to the next level
It’s National School Lunch Week, and the Austin ISD Food Services team is highlighting some of the dozens of local partners who provide healthy foods for our students.
Local vendors provide fresh bread, hot sauce, empanadas, tortillas, fresh produce and more. This week students get the chance to try some of those foods:

Tuesday: Apple crisp

Wednesday–Friday: Cucumber and tomato salad

Thursday: Watermelon, chicken tamales

Friday: baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato with BBQ pork
What they’re saying: “When we serve foods that are grown in Texas, our staff, students and school communities have a closer connection to the seed-to-tray process, while tasting and understanding the benefits of locally sourced fresh foods,” said Ryan Mikolaycik, Executive Director of Food Service and Warehouse Operations.
This week serves as a way to help students gain a greater understanding of where their foods come from, and introduces them to new foods and flavors, he said.
“We really view the cafeteria as a classroom, where we’re helping to build lifelong healthy habits.”

Hispanic Heritage Month profile: Emma Herrera Galindo
This is the fourth in a monthlong profile series spotlighting Hispanic heroes and path breakers who have influenced Austin ISD in some way.

As Austin ISD continues its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we profile dual language trailblazer Emma Herrera Galindo.
Bilingual education pioneer: Born in 1930, Galindo graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.
School namesake: Following her passing at the age of 52, the education community rallied to celebrate Galindo’s legacy at Austin ISD.

In 1984, local teaching legend Joe Dan Mills Jr.—the namesake of Mills Elementary—nominated Galindo to have a new South Austin school carry her name in recognition of her life, and her efforts to get dual language education implemented at Austin schools.
As remembered by her peers: "Galindo had made an indelible impression on [Joe Dan] Mills Jr., as he asked to be assigned to the newly built school as a teacher and ultimately as a principal," according to the Mills Elementary School website.
Language and scholarship legacies: Evidence of Galindo’s enthusiasm for languages and connection to the world continues to echo through the halls of the South Austin school. With a vast family heritage that claims ties to five continents worldwide, nine languages are spoken and celebrated on campus.

Her contribution to the classroom continues with the Emma Herrera Galindo Endowed Scholarship, established by her husband, WWII veteran and Austin High graduate Joe Galindo. The honor is awarded to students majoring in education.

📣 This Saturday, I’ll be joining the Hispanic Heritage Talent Show and Award Ceremony at the Performing Arts Center. I’m very excited to see the live performances of some of the students, teachers and staff of Austin ISD. Last year I took my son and we had a great time, he enjoyed the music.
