As part of Custodian & Groundskeeper Appreciation Week in Austin ISD, we're highlighting the dedicated staff who keep our schools running smoothly. In this installment of “Sparks of Joy” we introduce you to Ivan Tovar, head custodian at the Alternative Learning Center.

• Tovar has been working at Austin ISD for 35 years.
• His dedication to the district runs in the family—his sister works as a teaching assistant, and their father is a retired Austin ISD employee.

Why it matters: Tovar is the head custodian at the ALC, which will be demolished and rebuilt after this school year. Despite knowing this, Tovar continues to keep the building in excellent condition, maintaining its lawns, power-washing the walls, and shining its floors.

What he's saying: He’s dedicated to the work, even fixing broken windows and maintaining the school’s indoor garden, leading by example with a contagious passion for his job.

• “We came into this world to leave a legacy—to make the world a better place,” Tovar said.

The impact: Tovar’s influence goes beyond the building’s upkeep. He encourages other custodians to put in extra effort, reminding them that their work is an investment in the future of the district.

• “I encourage other custodians to walk the extra mile, to be generous, to see their mission as one that can save lives,” Tovar says. “Everything we give [to the district] is an investment, not a loss.”

His background: Tovar credits his father for teaching him the value of hard work and gratitude. He recalls how two ladies from the Human Resources team helped him get his GED when he first arrived in the U.S. from Mexico, giving him the opportunity to start working for the district.

One more thing: The families Tovar serves are forever grateful for his work. Years ago, when the school community learned he was building his house, they invested their time and money to help him finish sooner than he had hoped.

When people ask why he’s never applied for other jobs in the district, he answers: “Why would I? I love what I do.”

35 años de dedicación: El legado de servicio de Iván Tovar en el Austin ISD

Como parte de la Semana de Agradecimiento a los Conserjes y los Jardineros del Austin ISD estamos destacando al dedicado personal que mantiene nuestras escuelas funcionando sin problemas. En esta entrega de “Sparks of Joy” (Destellos de alegría) les presentamos a Ivan Tovar, el jefe de conserjes del Centro de Aprendizaje Alternativo (ALC, por sus siglas en inglés).

• Tovar ha trabajado en el Austin ISD durante 35 años.
• Su dedicación al distrito es un legado familiar: su hermana trabaja como asistente de maestro y su padre es un empleado jubilado del Austin ISD.

Por qué es importante: Tovar es el jefe de conserjes del ALC, que será demolido y reconstruido después de este ciclo escolar. A pesar de saberlo, Tovar sigue manteniendo el edificio en excelentes condiciones, cuidando sus jardines, lavando a presión las paredes y lustrando sus pisos.

Lo que él está diciendo: Está dedicado a su trabajo, incluso arregla ventanas rotas y mantiene el jardín interior de la escuela, predicando con el ejemplo con una pasión contagiosa por su trabajo.

• “Vinimos a este mundo para dejar un legado: hacer del mundo un lugar mejor”, dijo Tovar.

El impacto: La influencia de Tovar va más allá del mantenimiento del edificio. Alienta a otros conserjes a hacer un esfuerzo adicional, recordándoles que su trabajo es una inversión en el futuro del distrito.

• “Animo a otros conserjes a hacer un esfuerzo adicional, a ser generosos, a ver su misión como una que puede salvar vidas”, dice Tovar. “Todo lo que damos [al distrito] es una inversión, no una pérdida”.

Sus antecedentes: Tovar le da crédito a su padre por enseñarle el valor del trabajo duro y la gratitud. Recuerda cómo dos empleadas del equipo de Recursos Humanos lo ayudaron a obtener su GED cuando llegó por primera vez a los EE. UU. desde México, lo que le dio la oportunidad de comenzar a trabajar para el distrito.

Una cosa más: Las familias a las que Tovar sirve le estarán eternamente agradecidas por su trabajo. Hace años, cuando la comunidad escolar se enteró de que estaba construyendo su casa, invirtieron su tiempo y dinero para ayudarlo a terminar antes de lo que esperaba.

Cuando la gente le pregunta por qué nunca solicitó otros trabajos en el distrito, respondió: “¿Por qué lo haría? Amo lo que hago”.
