Ava Martinez is graduating this month with her sights set on becoming a firefighter. A senior at Austin High School, Martinez enrolled in the Fire Academy Program at LBJ Early College High School during her sophomore year, which stoked her curiosity and passion for the trade. 

Why it matters: Austin ISD offers a wide range of Career and Technical Education opportunities, regardless of the student’s home school. Through Student Sharing, students across the district can participate in unique programming and find their passion for the future.

• “It’s a really good opportunity. Martinez said. “I don’t know where I would be if I hadn't gone to the academy because I wouldn’t have known how much I love firefighting—I’m really, really grateful for it.” 

How it works: Martinez goes to Austin High School for her regular classes and then spends half her day at LBJ ECHS Fire Academy doing hands-on work towards her certifications. 

• Martinez isn't unfamiliar with the field. Her father and older brother are firefighters and although she hadn't planned to be one herself, she joined the LBJ Fire Academy to follow her brother’s path, who also attended the academy.
• “The motivation was definitely living up to the expectations of my dad and brother. I want to be able to show them that I can do it too,” Martinez said. 

What’s next: Martinez, is graduating from Austin High School with an LBJ Fire Academy certificate, and is ready to serve her community. She’s applied to the Austin Fire Department and If she's accepted and meets all criteria, she could begin her dream job in January.

Ava Martínez se graduará este mes con la mirada puesta en convertirse en bombero. Martínez, quien cursa el doceavo grado en la Escuela Preparatoria Austin, se inscribió en el Programa de la Academia de Bomberos de la Escuela Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana LBJ durante su segundo año, lo que avivó su curiosidad y pasión por el oficio.

Por qué es importante: El Austin ISD ofrece una amplia gama de oportunidades de Educación Técnica y Profesional , independientemente de la escuela de origen del estudiante. A través de Student Sharing, los estudiantes de todo el distrito pueden participar en una programación única y encontrar su pasión para el futuro.

• Es una muy buena oportunidad. dijo Martínez. "No sé dónde estaría si no hubiera ido a la academia porque no habría sabido lo mucho que me gusta ser bombero, estoy muy, muy agradecida por ello".

Cómo funciona: Martínez va a la Escuela Preparatoria Austin para sus clases regulares y luego pasa la mitad del día en la Academia de Bomberos de la Escuela Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana LBJ haciendo trabajo práctico para obtener sus certificaciones.

• Martínez está familiarizada con este campo. Su padre y su hermano mayor son bomberos y, aunque ella no había planeado serlo, se unió a la Academia de Bomberos de LBJ para seguir el camino de su hermano, que también asistió a la academia.
• La motivación fue sin duda estar a la altura de las expectativas de mi padre y mi hermano. Quiero poder demostrarles que yo también puedo hacerlo", dijo Martínez.

Lo que sigue: Martínez, se gradúa de la Escuela Preparatoria Austin con un certificado de la Academia de Bomberos LBJ, y está lista para servir a su comunidad. Ella ha aplicado al Departamento de Bomberos de Austin y si es aceptada y cumple con todos los requisitos, podría comenzar su trabajo soñado en enero.
