Dear Austin ISD community,
At the January 25 voting meeting of the Austin ISD Board of Trustees, the board hired Matias Segura as the new Austin ISD Superintendent, approving his contract with a unanimous vote. This is an important moment for our district. After more than 18 months under the leadership of two different interim superintendents, including Mr. Segura, we are excited to have a committed and capable leader for the district and its people.
Our choice was made after extensive outreach across our community and more than a year of collaboration with Mr. Segura in his role as interim superintendent. During that time, he has embraced improvements to Austin ISD’s culture and climate, found new approaches to fill teaching jobs and other positions impacted by attrition, and worked closely with the board to lead Austin ISD’s efforts to improve special education services including navigating our monitoring agreement with TEA.
We have great faith in Mr. Segura’s commitment to Austin ISD and in his ability to work with our board and community to celebrate and strengthen the district we love. He has shown up at campuses and local events with true joy and deep love for our community. He has proven his commitment to listening, learning, and using what he hears to make Austin ISD a better place for our students, our families, and our staff. And he has embraced several in-depth opportunities to gain essential new skills needed to run our large and complex district.
Mr. Segura’s contract will run through August 31, 2028 – a choice that reflects strong interest from the community and the board in a leader who is deeply committed to our district. This new stability for Austin ISD creates new opportunities to strengthen the experience and success of our students, support and celebrate our staff, deepen relationships with our families, and better connect our schools and our city.
While this is, in some ways, a continuation of the work Mr. Segura has been doing as interim for more than a year, it is also a new beginning. Together, we are ready to work with our new superintendent and our community to dream big, to honor Austin ISD’s many strengths, and to ensure Austin ISD is the district our city and our students deserve.
We thank Mr. Segura for stepping up to serve our district in this new way. And we look forward to all that’s ahead!

Este es un momento importante para nuestro distrito. Después de más de 18 meses bajo el liderazgo de dos diferentes superintendentes interinos, incluyendo al Sr. Segura, estamos emocionados de tener un líder comprometido y competente para el distrito y su gente.
Nuestra decisión fue tomada después de una extensa participación de nuestra comunidad y más de un año de colaboración con el Sr. Segura en su papel como superintendente interino. Durante ese tiempo, él ha impulsado mejoras en la cultura y el clima del Austin ISD, ha encontrado nuevos métodos para cubrir puestos de maestros y otros puestos afectados por el retiro de personal, y ha trabajado estrechamente con la mesa directiva para dirigir los esfuerzos del Austin ISD en mejorar los servicios de educación especial, incluyendo la implementación de nuestro acuerdo de supervisión con la TEA.
Tenemos mucha fe en el compromiso del Sr. Segura con el Austin ISD y en su capacidad para trabajar con nuestra mesa directiva y la comunidad para celebrar y fortalecer el distrito que tanto queremos. Se ha presentado en las escuelas y eventos locales con verdadera alegría y profundo amor por nuestra comunidad. Ha demostrado su compromiso de escuchar, aprender y usar lo que escucha para hacer del Austin ISD un mejor lugar para nuestros estudiantes, nuestras familias y nuestro personal. Y ha aprovechado varias oportunidades a fondo para adquirir nuevas habilidades esenciales necesarias para dirigir nuestro grande y complejo distrito.
El contrato del Sr. Segura se extenderá hasta el 31 de agosto de 2028, una decisión que refleja el fuerte interés de la comunidad y la mesa directiva en un líder que está profundamente comprometido con nuestro distrito. Esta nueva estabilidad para el Austin ISD genera nuevas oportunidades para fortalecer la experiencia y el éxito de nuestros estudiantes, apoyar y celebrar a nuestro personal, profundizar las relaciones con nuestras familias y conectar mejor nuestras escuelas con nuestra ciudad.
Si bien esto es, de alguna manera, una continuación del trabajo que el Sr. Segura ha estado haciendo como interino durante más de un año, también es un nuevo comienzo. Juntos, estamos listos para trabajar con nuestro nuevo superintendente y nuestra comunidad para soñar en grande, para honrar las muchas fortalezas del Austin ISD, y para asegurar que el Austin ISD sea el distrito que nuestra ciudad y nuestros estudiantes merecen.
