Translators and interpreters in education will now have another tool to support families thanks to Austin ISD’s own Spanish Translator and Interpreter Melissa González.

• González served on the AAITE Ethics and Professional Standards Committee to create The American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education's first National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Why it matters: Education is the only setting where legal, medical, community and conference interpreting and translation overlap, so it is important to have specific guidance on best practices when working for schools.

• Originally, standards existed for other fields, like healthcare and legal. Now these codes also exist for education. 

The details: These contributions, along with the others, will allow those in the translation and interpretation field to improve the way these services are delivered in a school setting.

• "I hope this will keep improving our profession,” González said. “I learned so much from working with incredible colleagues around the United States.”

Traductora del Austin ISD ayuda a trazar el camino de la ética profesional de otros traductores

Los traductores e intérpretes educacionales ahora tendrán otra herramienta para apoyar a las familias gracias a la traductora e intérprete del Austin ISD Melissa González.

• González sirvió en el Comité de Ética y Estándares Profesionales de la AAITE para crear el primer Código de Ética y Estándares para la Práctica de la Asociación Americana de Intérpretes y Traductores en Educación.

Por qué es importante: La educación es el único entorno en el que se integran la interpretación y la traducción legal, médica, comunitaria y de conferencia, así que es importante tener una guía específica sobre las prácticas óptimas para trabajar en las escuelas.

• Ya existían estándares para otros campos, como el de la atención médica y el legal. Ahora estos códigos también existen para el campo de la educación.
