Dear Austin ISD Community,

Tonight, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extend the contract of Interim Superintendent Matias Segura through June 30, 2024. We believe this is the best way to ensure that our most urgent issues are addressed, our 2023-24 school year is strong and successful, and our students are able to thrive and learn with the support of the excellent educators who choose to work in Austin ISD. 

As we enter the final months of the 2022-23 school year and plan for the next year, our board and administration remain laser-focused on four key, uniquely timebound issues. It is critical not to disrupt the work happening right now to: 

1. adopt and support an elementary school curriculum based on the science of reading and informed by the science of bilteracy, which will help all students and especially our historically marginalized students before another school year passes;
2. retain and recruit teachers after an unprecedented teacher exodus in the past two years, as our students should not endure another school year without a highly qualified teacher in every classroom;
3. address a Texas Education Agency investigation and Disability Rights Texas lawsuit concerning our special education evaluation backlog; and 
4. support and sustain our campuses that are currently under the Texas Education Agency’s Improvement Required status or are on the cusp of IR status to meet students’ needs for college, careers, and life, and avoid potential accountability sanctions for the district.

We are making progress in each of these areas, and will continue to share that progress with the community in the coming weeks and months.

Austin ISD has had four superintendents in the past three years. Right now, our district needs strong systems and stability, and we believe that bringing a new superintendent into AISD this summer is not the best choice for our students, our staff or our district’s long-term success.

We are glad for the chance to continue the work that’s being done under the leadership of Interim Superintendent Segura. He is approaching this important work with a strong background in creating systems to address the organization's needs, a clear belief in the value of collaboration and shared decision-making, an ability to trust experts to focus on what they know best and a deep love for Austin ISD.

Our community has shared many perspectives, and we recognize that no decision will match every need or satisfy every person who is part of our Austin ISD community.

We remain committed to working with all of you to ensure the best outcomes for our students. In the coming days, we will speak with our search partner, GR Recruiting, to discuss our options for continuing the superintendent search process. However, as trustees, we will continue to both seek your input and share our plans as they evolve.

Esta noche, la mesa directiva del Austin ISD votó unánimemente por prolongar el contrato del superintendente interino Matías Segura hasta el 30 de junio de 2024. Pensamos que esta es la mejor manera de garantizar que se aborden nuestros asuntos más urgentes, que nuestro ciclo escolar 2023–24 sea sólido y exitoso y que nuestros estudiantes puedan prosperar y aprender con el apoyo de los excelentes educadores que eligen trabajar en el Austin ISD. 

Al entrar en los últimos meses del ciclo escolar 2022–23 y planificar para el próximo año, nuestra mesa directiva y la administración permanecen intensamente enfocadas en cuatro asuntos clave de tiempo excepcionalmente limitado. Es fundamental no interrumpir el trabajo que se está haciendo en este momento para 

1. adoptar y apoyar un plan de estudios de primaria con base en la ciencia de la lectura y la ciencia de bialfabetismoque ayudará a todos los estudiantes y especialmente a nuestros estudiantes históricamente marginados antes de que pase otro ciclo escolar;
2. retener y reclutar maestros después de un éxodo de maestros sin precedentes en los últimos dos años, ya que nuestros estudiantes no deben sufrir otro ciclo escolar sin un maestro altamente cualificado en cada salón de clases;
3. abordar la investigación de la Agencia de Educación de Texas y la demanda relacionada con los derechos de los discapacitados en relación con nuestro retraso en las evaluaciones de educación especial; y 
4. apoyar y mantener a nuestras escuelas que actualmente están bajo el estado "requiere mejora" (IR, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Agencia de Educación de Texas o que están en el umbral del estado IR para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes para la universidad, la carrera profesional y la vida, y evitar sanciones por rendición de cuentas para el distrito.

Estamos teniendo un progreso en cada una de estas áreas y seguiremos compartiendo ese progreso con la comunidad en las próximas semanas y meses.

El Austin ISD ha tenido cuatro superintendentes en los últimos tres años. En este momento, nuestro distrito necesita sistemas sólidos y estabilidad, y pensamos que traer a un nuevo superintendente al Austin ISD este verano no es la mejor opción para nuestros estudiantes, nuestro personal ni el éxito a largo plazo de nuestro distrito.

Nos alegra tener la oportunidad de continuar con el trabajo que se está haciendo bajo el liderazgo del superintendente interino Segura. Está afrontando este importante trabajo con sólidos antecedentes en crear sistemas para abordar las necesidades del organización, una clara creencia en el valor de la colaboración y la toma de decisiones compartida, una capacidad para confiar en que los expertos se enfocarán en lo que mejor saben hacer y un profundo amor por el Austin ISD.

Nuestra comunidad ha compartido muchas perspectivas y reconocemos que ninguna decisión satisfará todas las necesidades ni a todas las personas que forman parte de nuestra comunidad del Austin ISD.
