What happened in San Antonio wasn't a political issue. It wasn't a talking point. The people who died in that truck were trying to find a place in this country where they could build better lives.

I am mindful that we have thousands of students in Austin ISD who are brand new to our country, and we're no different from any other large, urban school district in that regard.

The children who died in that truck are no different than many who are in our classrooms, and I wish they had found better lives with us. I'll leave the argument over policy to the politicians and speak only as an educator: These were real kids, and they deserved better opportunities.

Lo que sucedió en San Antonio no fue un problema político. No era un tema de discusión. La gente que murió en ese camión estaba tratando de encontrar un lugar en este país, donde ellos pudieran construir mejores vidas.

Estoy consciente de que tenemos miles de estudiantes en el Austin ISD que son nuevos en nuestro país y que no somos diferentes a cualquier otro distrito escolar urbano, grande en ese sentido.

Los niños que murieron en ese camión no son diferentes que muchos de los que están en nuestros salones de clases y deseo que hubieran encontrado una mejor vida con nosotros. Dejaré el debate sobre las políticas a los políticos y hablaré solo como un educador: Estos eran niños reales y merecían más oportunidades.
