During the spring semester, while in Stage 5, the district will excuse student absences related to pandemic concerns.

Why it matters: Families do not need to worry about their student’s attendance being impacted because they have to stay at home due to COVID-19.

• For example, if a parent is concerned about Austin-Travis County being in Stage 5 and decides to keep their student home because they have an immunocompromised family member, that absence will be excused.

Families must communicate with their campus about absences.

• While absent, students may receive assignments or activities via BLEND to complete at home. Students can make up work or attend tutoring upon return.

Yes, but: State law requires all students to attend in person for at least 90% of the time, excused or unexcused, to earn credit for the course.

• The law does have an exemption, which Austin ISD follows, to waive the 90% requirement by holding Attendance Committees for any student whose attendance is between 75% and 90%. 
• While COVID-related absences are excused, students who attend less than 90% of the time may need to take part in the Attendance Committee—which includes a parent and campus staff—to develop a plan to ensure students will still receive credit.

What they’re saying: “We will not be keeping children from going to the next grade level because they had to stay out because of unusual circumstances at home,” said Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde. “We will work with the individual student to give them enough time to get caught up.”

The bottom line: We’re doing everything we can to keep our schools open and safe for our students.

• We take the Omicron variant very seriously and have strict health measures in place, including a mask requirement.
