Historically, Austin ISD celebrates the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in the annual MLK Celebration march, sponsored by the Austin Area Heritage Council. This year, the march and many other Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities are being modified to keep everyone safe.
AISD encourages students, families and staff to celebrate safely with us at one or more of the free opportunities listed below. Whether you participate in these events or find your own way to honor Martin Luther King Jr., please be sure to use the hashtag #AISDMLK in your social media posts.
2022 MLK Virtual Rally
Monday, Jan. 17, 11 a.m.
From the Austin Area Heritage Council:
The 2022 MLK Festival and Food Drive at Huston-Tillotson University has been canceled.
Instead, we will hold a virtual MLK Rally program on January 17th. Our website and Facebook will be updated later this week with information on how to attend virtually. The purpose is to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy while highlighting diversity and multiculturalism in our city.
MLK Oratory Competition
Thursday, Jan. 13, 6:30 p.m. via Facebook and YouTube
Listen to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students compete in a five-minute speech based on the theme, “If Dr. King were alive today, what changes in today’s society would you recommend for his dream to become a reality in this country and in the world?” These inspiring young speakers will compete by delivering speeches commemorating Dr. King’s ideals and principles and continuing to encourage his legacy of peace and unity.
MLK Youth Legacy Scholarship Reception
Saturday, Jan. 15, 3–5 p.m. via Zoom and Facebook Live
The MLK Youth Scholarship Awards will be presented at the MLK Youth Scholarship Awards Virtual Program scheduled for 3–5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15.
Tradicionalmente, el Austin ISD celebra la vida y el legado de Martin Luther King Jr. participando en la marcha anual de celebración de MLK, patrocinada por el Consejo de Patrimonio Cultural del Área de Austin. Este año, la marcha y muchas otras actividades del Día de Martin Luther King Jr. se están modificando para mantenerlos a todos seguros.
El AISD invita a los estudiantes, las familias y el personal a que celebren de forma segura con nosotros en una o más de las oportunidades gratuitas enumeradas abajo. Ya sea que participe en estos eventos o que encuentre su propia manera de rendirle honor a Martin Luther King Jr., procure utilizar la etiqueta #AISDMLK en sus publicaciones en redes sociales.

En cambio, tendremos un programa durante una asamblea virtual de MLK el 17 de enero. Nuestro sitio web y Facebook se actualizarán más adelante esta semana con información sobre cómo asistir virtualmente. El propósito es celebrar el legado del Dr. King y al mismo tiempo destacar la diversidad y el multiculturalismo de nuestra ciudad.
Competencia de oratoria de MLK

Escuche a los estudiantes de 4.°, 5.° y 6.° grado competir con un discurso de cinco minutos basado en el tema: "Si el Dr. King estuviera vivo hoy, ¿qué cambios en la sociedad de hoy recomendarías para que su sueño se volviera realidad en este país y en el mundo?" Estos inspiradores y jóvenes oradores competirán con discursos escritos por ellos mismos en memoria de los ideales y principios del Dr. King para seguir promoviendo su legado de paz y unidad.
