Dear Austin ISD families,

With the rapidly evolving situation, we remain committed to providing timely updates to help you plan. That’s why we moved swiftly this past week to close our schools and communicate with families. I realize as the weather warms you may wonder why we made the proactive decision to close Monday and Tuesday, return to remote learning Wednesday and Thursday and end the week with the previously scheduled asynchronous Friday.

One main reason is the extensive damage caused by the winter storm  across our 120 plus schools and facilities.Many have  broken and frozen water pipes that have produced flooding, have little to no water pressure, or have no water at all.  Some of our schools  still do not have power or internet access. Our staff are currently assessing school buildings and it will take some time to resolve the issues they find. Furthermore, the city remains under a boil water notice and bottled water is in short supply. We are working to acquire bottled water and cafeteria food as many deliveries were delayed and are now backlogged as the weather has improved.  Additionally, University of Texas and Austin Community College have both also announced closures for at least Monday and Tuesday.  

As we emerged from one crisis into another, I knew our families and schools would need more time before we can all get back to some regular routines. I too am eager to get our students back learning but only under safe circumstances.

Why did the district decide to close schools three days out, and offer 100% remote learning Wednesday and Thursday?
After assessing our facilities we found many of our schools are still without power, little to no water pressure, and may have broken pipes and flooding. In addition, the entire city remains under a boil water notice with bottled water hard to find. Our facilities personnel have determined that it will take several days to resolve these issues. We also understand that many of our families and staff are still recovering from the damage caused by the storm and are unable to report to work themselves. Friday Feb. 26 was already scheduled to be an asynchronous learning day. 

Austin ISD was open during the boil water notice two years ago, why not now?
The situation two years ago was different in that it was not immediately preceded by two separate crises: the winter storm and subsequent power outages. Furthermore, most families had water two years ago, but it needed to be boiled. This time, many families or schools simply have no water flowering from their taps. In addition, many people stocked up on bottled water prior to the winter storm, making it more difficult to find now that the city is in the midst of a water crisis. For these reasons, holding classes Monday and Tuesday, even remotely, would be untenable.

My school has power and the route to school has cleared from the storm. Why isn’t it open?
We’re glad the situation is improving in some areas, such as clearer roads and more families with power. However, from the outside families may not see the broken pipe and the flooding or the lack of water pressure. Our facilities personnel are working hard on these issues, but it will take some time to remedy. 

How will the events over the last week affect the 6-week grading period at the secondary level?
The new ending date for the current grading period for all secondary grade level campus types has been extended to Tuesday, Feb. 23. Campus staff will communicate course-specific updates as they regain access to systems.

Where can I get resources if I don’t have water or food?

Con la situación en rápida evolución, seguimos comprometidos a proporcionar actualizaciones oportunas para ayudarles a planificar. Es por eso que nos movimos rápidamente la semana pasada para cerrar nuestras escuelas y comunicarnos con las familias. Comprendo que a medida que el clima se calienta, es posible que se pregunten por qué tomamos la decisión proactiva de cerrar el lunes y martes, volver al aprendizaje remoto el miércoles y jueves y terminar la semana con el viernes asincrónico previamente programado.

Una de las razones principales es el gran daño causado por la tormenta de invierno  en nuestras más de 120 escuelas e instalaciones. Muchas tienen tuberías de agua rotas y congeladas que han provocado inundaciones, tienen poca o ninguna presión de agua o no tienen agua en absoluto. Algunas de nuestras escuelas aún no tienen electricidad ni acceso a Internet. Nuestro personal está evaluando los edificios escolares y tomará algún tiempo resolver los problemas que encuentren. Además, la ciudad permanece bajo un aviso de hervir el agua y el agua embotellada es escasa. Estamos trabajando para adquirir agua embotellada y comida para la cafetería, ya que muchas entregas se retrasaron y ahora están atrasadas a medida que el clima ha mejorado. Además, la Universidad de Texas y el Austin Community College también han anunciado cierres por lo menos hasta el lunes y martes.  

A medida que salíamos de una crisis a otra, sabía que nuestras familias y escuelas necesitarían más tiempo antes de que todos pudiéramos volver a algunas rutinas regulares. Yo también estoy ansiosa por que nuestros estudiantes vuelvan a aprender, pero solo en circunstancias seguras.

¿Por qué el distrito decidió cerrar las escuelas con tres días de anticipación y ofrecer 100% aprendizaje remoto los miércoles y jueves?
Después de evaluar nuestras instalaciones, descubrimos que muchas de nuestras escuelas todavía no tienen electricidad, tienen poca o ninguna presión de agua y podrían tener tuberías rotas e inundaciones. Además, toda la ciudad permanece bajo un aviso de hervir el agua y es difícil encontrar agua embotellada. El personal de nuestras instalaciones ha determinado que tomará varios días resolver estos problemas. También entendemos que muchas de nuestras familias y personal todavía se están recuperando del daño causado por la tormenta y no pueden presentarse a trabajar. El viernes 26 de febrero ya estaba programado para ser un día de aprendizaje asincrónico. 

Austin ISD estuvo abierto durante el aviso de hervir el agua hace dos años, ¿por qué no ahora?
La situación hace dos años era diferente, ya que no fue precedida inmediatamente por dos crisis separadas: la tormenta invernal y los posteriores cortes de energía. Además, la mayoría de las familias tenían agua hace dos años, pero había que hervirla. Esta vez, a muchas familias o escuelas simplemente no les sale agua de sus grifos. Además, muchas personas se abastecieron de agua embotellada antes de la tormenta invernal, lo que hace más difícil encontrarla ahora que la ciudad se encuentra en medio de una crisis de agua. Por estos motivos, tener clases el lunes y martes, aunque sea de forma remota, sería insostenible.

Mi escuela tiene electricidad y la ruta a la escuela se despejó de la tormenta. ¿Por qué no está abierta?
Nos alegra que la situación esté mejorando en algunas áreas, como carreteras más despejadas y más familias con electricidad. Sin embargo, desde el exterior, las familias pueden no ver la tubería rota y la inundación o la falta de presión del agua. El personal de nuestras instalaciones está trabajando arduamente en estos problemas, pero tomará algún tiempo remediarlos. 

¿Cómo afectarán los eventos de la reciente semana al período de calificaciones de 6 semanas en el nivel secundario?
La nueva fecha de finalización del período de calificaciones actual para todos los tipos de planteles de nivel de educación secundaria se ha extendido hasta el martes 23 de febrero. El personal escolar comunicará actualizaciones específicas del curso a medida que recuperen el acceso a los sistemas.

¿Dónde puedo conseguir recursos si no tengo agua ni comida?
