Historically, Austin ISD celebrates the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in the annual MLK Celebration march, sponsored by the Austin Heritage Council. This year, the march and many other Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities are being modified to keep everyone safe.
AISD encourages students, families and staff to celebrate safely with us at one or more of the free opportunities listed below. Whether you participate in these events or find your own way to honor Martin Luther King Jr., please be sure to use the hashtag #AISDMLK in your social media posts.
MLK LiveStream and In-Car Rally
Monday, Jan. 18, 10:30 a.m.
In place of the traditional march and festival, the Austin Area Heritage Council will host a small, in-car rally, which will air on its Facebook and Youtube pages. Community members are invited to watch a short program honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and recommit to advancing the cause he died pursuing: social justice and racial reconciliation.
MLK Oratory Competition
Thursday, January 14, 6:30 p.m.
Students grades 4–6 will compete with a five-minute speech based on the theme, “If Dr. King were alive today, what dream would you discuss with him to promote and deliver to the people of the world in hopes of creating a better place for everyone to live?” The event will stream via the Austin Heritage Council Facebook and YouTube pages.
MLK Birthday Double Feature with Community Chat/Q&A
Friday, January 15, 1 p.m.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, the George Washington Carver Museum, Culture and Genealogy Center will host a virtual double feature followed by a community chat and Q&A via zoom. The screening will begin with HBO in Classrooms' "King in the Wilderness" followed by "We Are the Dream."

Together We Will Heal Reception
Monday, Jan. 18, 6 p.m.
The TogetherWeWillHeal Reception is a community gathering to foster relationships and create awareness about mental health, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. All community members are invited to spend an hour reflecting on the need to heal from this year’s occurrences.
The virtual reception is part of the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference and will be hosted on the Whova platform.

En lugar de la marcha y festival tradicionales, Austin Area Heritage Council (Consejo de Patrimonio Cultural del Área de Austin) presentará una pequeña asamblea en vehículos, que saldrá al aire en sus páginas de Facebook y YouTube. Estudiantes de 4.° a 6.° grado competirán con un discurso de cinco minutos con base en el tema "Si el Dr. King estuviera vivo hoy, ¿qué sueño discutirías con él para fomentar y hacer llegar a las personas del mundo con la esperanza de crear un mejor lugar para que vivan todos?" El evento se transmitirá por las páginas de Facebook y YouTube de Austin Heritage Council (Consejo de Patrimonio Cultural de Austin).
Doble función por el cumpleaños de MLK con chat comunitario y preguntas y respuestas

Para rendir homenaje al natalicio de Martin Luther King Jr., el Museo George Washington Carver, Centro de Cultura y Genealogía, presentará una doble función
virtual seguida por un chat comunitario y preguntas y respuestas vía Zoom. La proyección comenzará con "La lucha pacífica de Martin Luther King" de HBO in Classrooms, seguida por "We Are the Dream (Somos el sueño)".

Recepción Juntos sanaremos
Lunes, 18 de enero, 6 p.m.
La Recepción Juntos sanaremos es una reunión comunitaria para fomentar las relaciones y crear conciencia sobre la salud mental, los trastornos de consumo de drogas y alcohol, y las discapacidades intelectuales y de desarrollo. Se invita a todos los miembros de la comunidad a que pasen una hora reflexionando sobre la necesidad de sanar tras los sucesos de este año.
La recepción virtual es parte de la Conferencia de Apoyo a la Familia Afroamericana del Centro de Texas y se presentará en la plataforma Whova.
