Need to Know: Educational Models and Definitions  

We realize families want to make the best choice for their students. Prior to face-to-face instruction beginning again, families will be given an intent form to determine the caregiver’s learning choice for their students (remote or in-person). Please know that flexibility will be incorporated at specific times during the school year to allow caregivers to change their choice regarding how instruction is delivered. As we continue to communicate, we wanted our families to know the models we are currently planning as well as some definitions and details. 

On-Campus Face-to-Face Teaching and Learning

On-campus face-to-face learning occurs when the teacher and the student meet physically in a classroom for a set time with whole-group lessons, small-group lessons, guided practice and independent practice, including social distancing and health and safety measures in place.

Remote Teaching and Learning

Remote learning occurs when the student and teacher are separated by distance and either meet online at an agreed-upon time (synchronous), or the student receives instructions for learning and completes their assignments at their own pace (asynchronous). The teacher and student do not meet in a traditional physical classroom setting. 

Synchronous Instruction

Requires students and teachers to be present at the same time online. Examples include live interactive classes with students and teachers participating in real-time, or teacher-supported student work time on video conference calls. This may also include small group instruction online, testing, etc. This model is a form of remote learning.

Asynchronous Instruction

Does not require students and teacher to be present online at the same time.  Examples include self-paced online courses with intermittent teacher instruction, pre-assigned work with regular assessments on paper, or in BLEND, or Seesaw and can also be pre-recorded videos of instruction, etc. This model is also a form of remote learning. 

Need to know: Teaching and Learning—What It Looks Like

In collaboration with our teachers, our goal is to provide exemplary lessons, support remote instruction and ease our eventual transition back to on-campus instruction. That’s why AISD is committed to the following standards when teaching remotely or via face-to-face instruction: 

• All teachers will implement research-based, best instructional practices.
• We have identified and prioritized mastery of essential standards (what students need to master by the end of the year in order to be prepared for the next grade level) for each grade level and in each subject or course. Teachers will articulate those standards in student-friendly language in BLEND (some Pre-K-2 teachers will link to Seesaw as well). 
• Teachers will deliver lessons in every subject area and course, including core subject as well as special areas (art, music, physical education). The progression of learning will address the following questions:
  • What are students expected to know and be able to do to accomplish mastery of the essential standard?
  • How will we know if a student learned the essential standard?
  • How will we respond if a student did not learn the essential standard?
  • How will we extend the learning for a student who has mastered the essential standard?
• Teachers will take grades in every subject area and course, according to Board policy
• Students can expect a full report card with grades instead of the Pass/Incomplete system used in remote learning last spring.
• Students will receive regular feedback on coursework
• Teachers will hold remote office hours when teaching remotely. These times are an additional opportunity for students, teachers, and caregivers to connect. 
• Instruction will include social-emotional learning strategies and lessons.
• Teachers and other campus staff will call, email and use BLEND to maintain regular caregiver communication.
• Students will receive regular evaluations to ensure they are making progress on the essential standards.
• Students and teachers will work together to create learning goals as the students progress toward mastering the essential standards. 
• Special Education: Teachers will provide support for special education students that aligns with their individual education plan. Teachers will provide modifications and accommodations and stay in close contact with parents regarding the progress.
• Dual Language: Teachers will provide instruction in both program languages according to the language allocation plan in support of the goals of biliteracy and bilingualism, high academic achievement and positive cross-cultural competence.
• Teachers will differentiate instruction to ensure that every student is receiving what he or she needs to be successful.

Good to Know: AISD Green Energy Rebate

Austin Energy recently presented AISD with a rebate check for $301,759. This rebate was made possible by lighting retrofits and energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades at several AISD schools.

Get In the Know: Curbside Registration for New Students

Students new to AISD can register onsite at their campus, Aug. 3–6 from 9–11 a.m. and 1–3 p.m.

Families registering students new to AISD should provide the following documentation at the child’s campus:

• Child’s birth certificate.
• Child’s social security card (optional).
• Child’s immunization records.
• Child’s withdrawal form/last report card (if applicable).
• Parent/guardian photo ID.
• Proof of guardianship (if applicable).
• Proof of residency.

In order to make the process as safe as possible for all involved, campus staff will make transfer of documents as contactless as possible. They will wear masks and gloves and transfer paperwork using baskets, trunks of vehicles and/or other ways to ensure maximum social distancing.

We ask that families wear a mask and remain in their vehicles or six feet away from staff at all times. We also ask that families and staff stay at home if experiencing any illness.

Communication with families on-site will be by way of texting or phone call when possible.

To further engage with our families about the reopening process, we’ve begun livestreaming interviews between Dr. Cruz and subject-matter experts multiple times per week. The videos are in English and Spanish. You can see the videos on our Facebook and YouTube pages.

Necesita saber: Modelos educativos y definiciones   

Sabemos que las familias quieren tomar la mejor decisión para sus niños. Antes de que vuelva a comenzar la instrucción cara a cara, se les dará a las familias un formulario de intención para determinar qué opción de aprendizaje quiere el cuidador para su niño (remota o presencial). Sepan que habrá flexibilidad en momentos específicos durante el ciclo escolar para permitirles a los cuidadores cambiar su elección en relación con la manera en que se imparte la instrucción. A medida que seguimos comunicándonos, queríamos que nuestras familias supieran los modelos que estamos planeando actualmente, así como algunas definiciones y detalles.  
 
Enseñanza y aprendizaje presencial en el plantel 

El aprendizaje presencial en el plantel ocurre cuando el maestro y el estudiante se reúnen físicamente en un salón de clases por un tiempo determinado con lecciones para todo el grupo, lecciones en grupos pequeños, práctica guiada y práctica independiente, incluyendo el distanciamiento social y las medidas de salud y seguridad establecidas. 
 
Enseñanza y aprendizaje remotos 

El aprendizaje remoto ocurre cuando el estudiante y el maestro están separados por la distancia y, o bien se encuentran en línea en un momento acordado (sincrónico), o el estudiante recibe instrucciones para aprender y hacer sus tareas a su propio ritmo (asincrónico). El maestro y el estudiante no se encuentran físicamente en un salón de clases tradicional. 
 
Instrucción sincrónica 

Requiere que los estudiantes y maestros estén presentes en línea al mismo tiempo. Los ejemplos incluyen clases interactivas en vivo con los estudiantes y maestros participando en tiempo real o tiempo de trabajo estudiantil con apoyo del maestro durante llamadas de videoconferencia. Esto también puede incluir instrucción en línea en grupo pequeño, pruebas, etc. Este modelo es un tipo de aprendizaje remoto. 
 
Instrucción asincrónica 

No requiere que los estudiantes y el maestro estén presentes en línea al mismo tiempo.  Los ejemplos incluyen cursos en línea al ritmo propio con instrucción intermitente del maestro, trabajo previamente asignado con evaluaciones regulares en papel, BLEND o SeeSaw, y también puede ser videos didácticos grabados previamente, etc. Este modelo también es un tipo de aprendizaje remoto. 

Necesita saber: Cómo es la enseñanza y el aprendizaje 

En colaboración con nuestros maestros, nuestra meta es ofrecer lecciones ejemplares, apoyar la enseñanza a distancia y facilitar nuestra eventual transición de regreso a la instrucción en el plantel. Por eso, el AISD está comprometido con los siguientes estándares cuando la instrucción es a distancia o presencial: 

• Todos Los maestros implementarán prácticas óptimas de instrucción basadas en investigación. 
• Hemos identificado y priorizado el dominio de estándares esenciales (qué tienen que dominar los estudiantes al final del año para estar preparados para el siguiente grado) para cada grado y en cada materia o curso. Los maestros articularán esos estándares en un lenguaje al alcance de los estudiantes en BLEND (algunos maestros de prekínder a 2.° grado también se conectarán a Seesaw).  
• Los maestros impartirán las lecciones en todas las materias y cursos, incluyendo materias básicas y de áreas especializadas (arte, música, educación física). El progreso de aprendizaje también se enfocará en las siguientes preguntas: 
  • ¿Qué se espera que los estudiantes sepan y puedan hacer para lograr el dominio del estándar esencial? 
  • ¿Cómo sabremos si un estudiante aprendió el estándar esencial? 
  • ¿Cómo responderemos si un estudiante no aprendió el estándar esencial? 
  • ¿Cómo responderemos si un estudiante no aprendió el estándar esencial? 
• Los maestros asignarán calificación a cada materia y curso, de acuerdo a la norma de la mesa directiva. 
• Los estudiantes pueden esperar una boleta con calificaciones completa en lugar del sistema de aprueba o incompleto, usado en el aprendizaje a distancia de la primavera pasada. 
• Los estudiantes recibirán con regularidad comentarios sobre su trabajo en la clase. 
• Los maestros tendrán horas de oficina remotas cuando den clases a distancia. Estas horas son una oportunidad adicional para que los estudiantes, los maestros y los cuidadores se comuniquen.  
• La instrucción incluirá estrategias y lecciones de aprendizaje social y emocional. 
• Los maestros y otros empleados del plantel llamarán, enviarán correos electrónicos y usarán BLEND para mantener comunicación regular con el cuidador. 
• Los estudiantes recibirán evaluaciones regulares para que se aseguren de que están progresando en los estándares esenciales. 
• Los estudiantes y los maestros trabajarán juntos para crear objetivos de aprendizaje a medida que progresan hacia el dominio de los estándares esenciales.  
• Educación Especial: Los maestros brindarán apoyo a los estudiantes de educación especial que se alinee con su plan de educación individualizada. Los maestros proporcionarán modificaciones y adaptaciones y estarán en comunicación cercana con los padres de familia sobre el progreso.

• Los maestros diferenciarán la instrucción para garantizar que cada estudiante está recibiendo lo que necesita para tener éxito. 

Conviene saber: Reembolso por energía ecológica al AISD

Austin Energy recientemente le presentó al AISD un cheque de reembolso por $301,759. Este reembolso fue posible gracias a modernizaciones en la iluminación y actualizaciones de eficiencia energética en la calefacción, la ventilación y el aire acondicionado en varias escuelas del AISD. 

Entérese: Matriculación de nuevos estudiantes desde la banqueta  

Los estudiantes nuevos del AISD pueden matricularse en su plantel del 3 al 6 de agosto de 9 a 11 a.m. y de 1 a 3 p.m. 
Las familias que están matriculando estudiantes nuevos en el AISD deben proveerle los siguientes documentos al plantel del niño: 

• Certificado de nacimiento del niño 
• Tarjeta de seguro social del niño (opcional) 
• Cartilla de vacunación del niño 
• Formulario de baja o última boleta de calificaciones del niño (si aplica) 
• Identificación con foto del padre de familia o tutor legal 
• Comprobante de tutoría legal (si aplica) 
• Comprobante de domicilio 

Para que este proceso sea lo más seguro posible para todos los involucrados, el personal escolar transferirá los documentos con el mínimo contacto posible. Se pondrá cubrebocas y guantes y transferirá los papeles utilizando canastas, las cajuelas de los vehículos u otras maneras que garanticen el máximo distanciamiento social. 
 
Les pedimos a las familias que se pongan cubrebocas y permanezcan en sus vehículos o a seis pies de distancia del personal en todo momento. También les pedimos a las familias y al personal que se queden en casa si tienen síntomas de cualquier enfermedad. 
 
La comunicación con las familias en el lugar será por texto o llamada telefónica cuando sea posible.
