The Northeast Early College High School community, staff, families and friends joined together June 16 to celebrate the 2020 graduating class through a virtual ceremony.
Superintendent Paul Cruz congratulated the graduates of this year's class via a video statement. His remarks were followed by a speech from Principal Sterlin McGruder.
“To our amazing senior class, you have arrived. While you are indeed at the finish line, and should celebrate, you will soon realize it is only the first leg of this journey, and I'm here to pass you the baton,” McGruder said. “Who knew that Northeast students, on March 12th, in the near future, you would be enduring hardship, loss, and grief, but just like that mythical Phoenix, you have made it through adversity and now can call yourself high school graduates.”
Next, Salutatorian Destanie Maese spoke about how high school and the pandemic won’t be the only things they will have to face in life, but that every battle will strengthen them and help them reach new heights.
“Northeast Class of 2020, united we will stand in the face of the hardships presented. With every challenge we will discover a new strength, a new passion, a new person within. I urge you to make your mark in the world, not without honor.”
Before the reading of the names of each graduating senior, Valedictorian Michelle Abalos-Berumen highlighted that this is the first step of a longer journey to come.
“Through all the difficulties, I'm staying focused on what I want to be, and you should too. Don't let any doubt, worry, or despair shatter your dreams because there will always be people around you who support you, rooting for you, believing in you.”
The ceremony concluded with a reading of the names of each graduating senior.
The AISD community is proud of our students and eager to see their future accomplishments. Congratulations to the Class of 2020! We are #AISDProud of our #AISDGrads!
