The Garza Independence High School community, staff, families and friends joined together June 16 to celebrate the 2020 graduating class through a virtual ceremony.
Superintendent Paul Cruz congratulated the graduates of this year's class via a video statement. His remarks were followed by Graduating Senior Roni Rodriguez, who spoke about, and introduced, Dr. Gonzalo Garza.
“As years go by and people come and go, Garza High School has kept its same values, allowing for everyone to prosper as equals," Rodriguez said. "This is exactly why our school has been named after Dr. Gonzalo Garza.”
Next, Dr. Garza provided reassuring words for these challenging times and gave advice for the future.
“My graduation wish for you is to be the best you can be, to trust your own ability, to live the way you want to live, to take what each new day can give,” said Dr. Garza.
Following Dr. Garza’s speech, Garza Principal Dr. Linda Webb spoke about how well the Class of 2020 adapts to change and how they are better prepared because of it.
“It has given me great joy to have been just a small, small part of your journey, growing into the person that you've become," Dr. Webb said. "I look forward to a future where you all will be in charge of making this a more understanding and kinder world."
Before the reading of the names of each graduating senior, Graduating Senior Charli Zern highlighted the day-to-day experiences at Garza that make it special.
“Garza didn't make us people or unlock our humanity. It gave us the breathing room to unlock it ourselves,” said Zern.
The ceremony concluded with a reading of the names of each graduating senior.
The AISD community is proud of our students and eager to see their future accomplishments. Congratulations to the Class of 2020! We are #AISDProud of our #AISDGrads!
