Austin ISD celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Doss Elementary School on Sept. 6 with families, staff, students and the community, including the Doss Owl.
Superintendent Paul Cruz spoke 21-century learning spaces for students—collaborative and outdoor learning spaceswhere students can communicate and work together or independently throughout the school.
Principal Janna Griffin recognized trustee Julie Cowan, FABPAC members, staff, PTA and the community for their hard work in the development of the Facility Master Plan to meet Doss's many needs by building a state-of-the-art elementary school in Northwest Hills.
The Doss school choir helped ring in the celebration by singing their school song, before breaking new ground on the school.
Doss Elementary is a $43 million modernization project that will receive new construction and expansion.
The new campus being built on the existing site will bring capacity to 870 students, up from 543, and will relieve overcrowding.
The school is set to open in August 2020.
