Akins High School honored more than 580 seniors at its graduation ceremony this evening at the Frank Erwin Center.
The ceremony included an address by Justin Charles Iglehart—the grandson of Akins High School’s namesake, the late Dr. W Charles Akins—in which he reminded students to be “shining lights” in their communities.
Iglehart also paid tribute to Akins Principal Brandi Hosack, who will be leaving Austin ISD this year.
The Class of 2018 recorded several noteworthy accomplishments:
- Tiffany Pham was one of only 30 students in the state of Texas to be awarded the University of Texas Impact Scholarship for making an impact in her community.
- Jose Tapia was awarded the very first University of Texas OnRamps Micromajor.
- Alyson Gabourel helped MC the ‘Inspire the Future’ State of the District luncheon.
Superintendent Paul Cruz also recognized graduating members of the Akins band and members of the newspaper, Eagle's Eye, for their talent and hard work.
Valedictorian Saba Naiyer talked about the importance of being true to who you are and not being afraid to try doing things a different way.
"Be different, be unique," she said. "Don’t let others tell you that your dreams and aspirations are insignificant or unreasonable."
Congratulations to the Akins High School Class of 2018! We’re #AISDProud of our #AISDGrads!
