Five students from International High School have been selected as participants in the Texas Advanced Computer Center program for summer 2018.
Gabriela Galindo, Ahmed Muslim, Abraham Debasu, Yohany Cordova and Thierry Murwanashyaka applied for the summer engineering courses earlier the spring semester.
The TAAC program is sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin. The program—CODE @ TAAC—takes place on UT Austin campus June 17–23.
The program seeks to enroll rising juniors and seniors to visit the university, live on campus and learn more about science, technology, engineering and math, but focus on computer science.
Student engineers stay in campus dormitories and have access to other campus amenities. Meals and housing are free for the students.
TACC designs and uses advanced computing technologies and software solutions to help researchers answer questions about health care epidemics, weather patterns such as global warming, and ecological changes that occur throughout the world.
Expected activities for the students include:
- Use of project based-learning to foster creativity and problem-solving skills.
- Participation in teambuilding exercises that prepare students for the workplace of the future.
- Use of hands-on technology to learn the basics of embedded programming languages and electronics.
- Design, creation and programming of a robot.
- Participation in a field trip to a local tech company.
- Receiving a private tour and working at the TACC Visualization Laboratory and data center.
- Interacting with TACC's technology systems.
- Collaborating with peers, college students, scientists, researchers and engineers.
IHS students have the opportunity to follow up with additional engineering camps and courses as part of the Early College High School program at Eastside Memorial, and the affiliate courses with Austin Community College.
