Student athletes from Murchison and Gorzycki middle schools competed in the inaugural Austin ISD Middle School Golf Tournament, held at the historic Hancock Golf Course.
The tournament, held April 30, joined the two campuses’ newly created golf clubs and allowed students to compete for the first time. The golf clubs were created by Murchison Golf Coach Melissa Williamson and Gorzycki Golf Coach Eric Fourmy. Parents, sponsors and students collaborated to bring the tournament to life.
“This is the first tournament of many more to come,” Williamson said. “Since word has spread about the tournament, other schools are wanting to partner next year to form their own middle school golf clubs.”
Seventh-grade Murchison athlete Darrelyn Webster has played golf since she was four years old. While she competes regularly outside of school, she said working with the campus and representing her school was a high point in the year.
“Making history doing something I love to do was very exciting," Darrelyn said. “There is something special about being able to represent your school in an organization or on a team so I am glad that my friends and I were part of this historic moment.”
Darrelyn earned the title of Girls Golf Champion and Jason Oh of Goryzcki earned the title of Boys Golf Champion.
