Austin High Basketball Captain Lends a Hand with 'Shoes for Two'

Austin High School senior and basketball captain Lucas Renfroe is not just assisting his teammates on the court this season, he’s lending a helping hand to those in need.

Renfroe and his father, Mark, founded Shoes for Two, a nonprofit group that receives donations of lightly used shoes, cleans them, boxes them and then distributes them to children or organizations in need.

“It really gets the whole community involved and it gets everybody feeling like they can be part of a good deed,” Lucas Renfroe said. “It’s kind of a good bonding thing for the community that everybody feels like they can be part of something altruistic.”

Shoes for Two accepts donations at every Austin High home basketball game, and head basketball coach Brad Ingram believes it’s a perfect opportunity to connect with the community.

“This organization gives us a chance to do something together outside of basketball—to do something that can impact kids, especially in a positive way,” Ingram said.

Ingram praised his captain for more than his efforts on the court, but also for his leadership and genuine concern for others.

“To have a player approach me and say, ‘Coach, I want to give back, can you help?’ just really makes me proud,” Ingram said.
