The seniors on the Anderson varsity tennis team have come a long way since their freshman year.
In the fall season of 2012, they won one match. They then rallied for five wins as sophomores and 11 as juniors. For their seniors' finale, the Trojans advanced to the regional tournament for the first time since 2007.
"With their leadership, this hardworking, dedicated team made the dream of the regional tournament a reality," said Anderson coach Erin Martin.
The Anderson seniors led the team to a five-hour triumph over Coppell in the Trojans' 6A regional tournament debut, later falling to top seed and eventual state champion Houston Memorial in the regional semifinals.
The Bowie Bulldogs finished second to Anderson in district and fell to No. 4 state-ranked Westwood in the area semifinals. During the regular season, the netters from south Austin also knocked off a trio of 5A state-ranked teams by a combined score of 67-7.
Bowie coach James Damman said the future is bright for the Dawgs, who have 13 underclassmen on their varsity squad.
"We are excited for the spring season," Dammann said. "With such a young team, I think the all-day tournaments will be a great opportunity for the players to gel, bond and grow as a team."
