Student lunches got a touch sweeter today with the debut of Carter Hull's BBQ Sauce to accompany barbecue items in all Austin ISD middle schools and high schools.
The brown sugar-based sauce was created by Murchison Middle School student Carter Hull, who said he prefers sweet to heat in his barbecue sauces.
Carter said the recipe—which also includes tomato sauce and paste—has evolved since he first created it.
"It's come a long way, and right now it's in a really good spot," he said. "I'm really proud of it."
The middle schooler said he started with guacamole, but one of his favorite foods to make for other people is ribs on a smoker or grill.
"I've been cooking for a while now, but last year was the first year I really go into it," he said. "There's something about it that I just love."
That love was on display when Carter was chosen to appear on a new Food Network show, Kids BBQ Championship.
He said the show was a great experience, and he's happy to be able to share part of his excitement about cooking with students throughout the district.
For other aspiring young cooks, Carter offers this advice: "Just be yourself—Cook like you want to eat, and put a piece of yourself on every plate."
