Austin ISD Board President Gina Hinojosa last night announced her resignation as president. She plans to seek the District 49 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
Hinojosa will remain on the board to serve students and their families in the at-large District 8; her resignation as president becomes effective Tuesday, Dec. 15.
She thanked those who have helped her as board president and with the board's work, and said she believed it appropriate to withdraw as president while campaigning for state office.
Hinojosa was elected to the board in November 2012 and was elected president by her fellow trustees in January.
Vice President Amber Elenz will become acting president and temporarily take on Hinojosa's duties. The board is not required to elect a new president or reorganize officers until after the November 2016 election, but may do so when it reconvenes in January.
